FAITH IN LEAGUE OF NATIONS

“ONLY SOLUTION TO

PROBLEMS”

WOMEN’S PART IN WORLD

AFPAIRS

A plea lor her hearers not to lose hope in the League of Nations as the only solution to the complex problems of the world to-day was made by Miss Kathleen Courtney, a member of the National Executive of the British League of Nations Union, in her reply to a civic welcome tendered in Christchurch yesterday. Miss Courtney is travelling under the auspices of the Young Women’s Christian Association, but she spoke chiefly of women’s opportunities in the realm of world affairs and dealt with the League as the solution of to-day’s problems. Men and women were concerned equally in world affairs, said Miss Courtney, and women had to look beyond an immediate desire for peace to see a positive conception of a new world in-which justice would be preserved and good relations flourish among the nations. Many things were wanted—study, understanding, goodwill. The world to-day seemed a long way from the ideal envisaged after the world war, and people said the League of Nations had failed. The founders of the League were not vague idealists, but hard-headed statesmen, and they still pinned their faith to the League as the only solution of the world s problems. , “You have your part to play, said Miss Courtney in an appeal to women. “Do not lose hope. Resolve to stand by whatever you have seen as a vision of God and endeavour to assist in its realisation.” Welcoming Miss Courtney, the Mayor (Mr J. W. Beanland) said their guest was a world figure in the cause of peace and New Zealand was honoured to have a visit from her. Mrs B. H. Gilmour spoke for the Young Women’s Christian Association and Miss M, G. Havelaar for the National Council of Women, the latter saying that it was through the League of Nations Union that women in New Zealand could try to do their small pact to bring about world peace. Associated with the speakers were Lady Acland, Miss Courtney’s host during her stay in Christchurch, Mrs Beanland, and Miss Phyllis Kindle (general secretary of the Young Vf. omen’s Christian Association),
