RACING AND TROTTING

PROSPECTS FOR EASTER

TRENTHAM PROVIDES A LINE

CHANCES OF SOUTHERN HORSES

(By Carbine.)

With the Easter meetings at hand it might be well to cast an eye over the form at Trentham. That form should be a useful Easter guide.

Much reliance need not be placed on the high-weight form; the riding in those events was too bad for a reliable line to be obtained.

Royal Chief was the best of the horses in tne weight-for-age races. He b6at The Crooner comfortably in the St. Leger, and if his disposition to soreness does not affect him he should be a better, horse for any immediate engagements which may be made for him. The Crooner is good without being exceptional. He was hanging out a little during the St. Leger, and may have been feeling the effects of a kick he received before the race. After the race he was lame.'

Defaulter was the pick of the two-year-olds. He is a solid and improving colt; but the North Island Challenge Stakes, which he annexed, was not a really difficult race to win. His chief opponent turned out to be Oratory, a smart handicap mare with no special ability as a weight carrier. Courtcraft, who should have been the most difficult horse to beat, did not run; and Surmount, who should have been prominent, did not look thoroughly ready, and was not advantageously ridden. However, it is unlikely that the best has been seen of Defaulter, who is a good galloper and a strong, determined finisher, who should become a fine weight carrier. The Best Handicappers

Trentham patrons did not see the best of Stretto. She is a very good mare, and may do better ax the Auckland Easter meeting. Two good horses of yesterday, Jonathan and Silver Ring, appear to be well past their best; though witn each a spasmodic return of form is possible. Wotan ran inconspicuously, and Siegmund only moderately. Two good races went to the credit of Catalogue, who should have a say in the decision of any of the . autumn handicaps he contests. Brazen King was unequal to Trentham class. The Riccarton horses,, Davolo and Dictate, nearly dominated the Dig handicap on the second day, Davolo winning and Dictate running third. Both finished well, especially Davolo, and they should be able to repeat the form. Studley Royal ran well enough at the meeting to be expected to win again shortly. No more promising handicap performer than Smoke Screen was seen in action. His second in the Thompson and his subsequent win were impressive performances. He is a very good three-year-old, with a very bright future. Sfilieman failed in the Thompson, finding the torrid mile beyond' him. Francis Drake seemed to be a little above himself —a .trifle carty looking, in fact — and the two races should improve him. Whirling is highly rated in the north, but on recent performances seems to be over-estimated. Two useful sorts and likely winners lower down the list of handicap horses are Roaming and Old Surrey, . -Sprinters Not Very Good

The sprinters were not a really smart lot, and Paper Slipper, the best of them, was handsomely beaten by Lady Ina, who was in receipt of 131b. Paper Slipper made a fair effort in the last furlong, but when Lady Ina was called on by her rider she drew away, and won decisively. Laughing Lass won the first day’s open sprint nicely under 7-11, but when risen to 8-7 was beaten into sixth place. She is not a good weight carrier. Failures included Top Row, Tray Bit, Royal Bachelor, and Triune. Triune is rapidly descending .the weight scale. Grey Honour was unlucky not to win on the first day. His barrier behaviour was his downfall. j He .is capable of scoring in fairly good sprint company. Brunhild, too, was a little unlucky on the first day, and may pick up a race soon. Most promising of the light-weight sprinters wasAlunga. Among the hack sprinters none showed greater speed than Valmarch, but he was kept busy all the way -to retain a leading position, and, substantially weighted, failed to run on in the straight. However, his second over seven furlongs indicated that he is a pretty good hack. Bluffer ran well over seven furlongs on the first day, but was outpaced in the six on the second day. Hacks who should win soon are Majority, Nightcalm, and Lazybones. Lazybones was very unlucky not to score a clear-cut win on the second day when he ran a dead-heat with Nightcalm. A complete failure in the champion hack class was the Aucklander, Jack Tar, who for days before the meeting was spoken of as unbeatable. Conveyor was disappointing; and Ilias strengthened the opinion that she cannot stay. Accomplice is improving. Happy Night is fairly good, but as a stayer Ned Cuttle outclassed the hack brigade.

NO DECISION YET

NEW STIPENDIARY STEWARD

(By Carbine.)

One of the most important matters considered by the executive of the New Zealand Racing Conference last week was the appointment of a new stipendiary steward to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr G. N. McLean, who had officiated in the South Island.

The applications considered numbered about 60, and by stages these were reduced to a comparative few possibilities, but a decision was not made. However, it is understood that an announcement may be availablethis week.

TURF GOSSIP

Grand National Winner Nocturnus is to make his appearance in the high-weight event at Oamaru to-day. He has not fully recovered from a strained tendon, and the race is being given him to-day in the nature of a test. He has been nominated for two steeplechases at Riverton at Easter, and his programme will depend' cn how he progresses after the Oamaru fixture. He will be ridden to-day by R. Beale, who will also ride him at Riverton. Riverton Nominations

Included in the nominations for the Riverton Cup are: Waitaka, Dictate, Linguist. High Glee, Silver Streak. Galleon, Milford, Paladino, Wild Career, Pirik Robe, Salient Knight, Queen Dorothy, and Amellta. In addition to Nocturnus, Arctic Star, trained by D. O’Connor, figures in the Great Western Steeplechase on the first day. Riccarton-trained Flame Queen has been nominated for the two maiden events at the meeting. Guinea Fowl Mr J. A. Smaill is the new owner of Guinea Fowl, and the Paper Money filly has joined J. Andrews’s stable at Wingatui. Riders at Oamarn

Some riding engagements for the Oamaru meeting to-day are:—C. Wilson, Double Gift, Lady Kinnoull, Rebel Lad, Balmenter; A. Parsons, The Masquerader, Flame Queen: G. Watson. Rabble, Lisnacree, Haughty Winner; M. Caddy. Nigella, Stratosphere, Bellerive, Sheeny; J. Jennings, Linguist, Netherlea; J. Murfitt, Drinkup; R. Beale, Nocturnus; A. Messervy, Bright Prospect. Romarin; L. J. Ellis, Galleon. Steer Clear, Dracula, Cocksure; L. Pratt, Amount; W. Hogan, Superex; J. Jenkins, Norseman, High Glee; A. E Ellis, Silver Streak. Only One Race Haughty Winner is to have his first race for his new owner, Mr T. Coltman, of Wellington, at Oamaru to-day. He will not remain for the second day Fresh Blood.

There are some little-known candidates in the Trial Stakes at Oamaru to-day. Steer Clear is a three-year-old filly by Lord Warden from Sea Raid, and is trained by E. J. Ellis at Washdyke; Strip is a three-year-old gelding by Valkyrian from Dismantle, trained by A. E. Didham at Mosgiel: Donroy is a two-year-old gelding by Roydon from Miss Attorney.

First Appearance Lady Kinnoull is due to have her first race at Oamaru to-day. She has shown her ability to gallop, but will need some racing and travelling to settle her down. Kinnoull will also be seen out at to-day’s meeting, but not as a competitor. He was taken south with other members of D. Cotton’s team and will be given a gallop during an interval in to-day's programme.

Mutus Destroyed The seven-year-old gelding Mutus. by Songbird, broke a leg while working at Washdyke yesterday and was destroyed. Strong Cup Field

Silver Streak and Linguist figure in two races at Oamaru to-day, but both are likely to start in the Cup, for which the eight acceptors are expected to go to the post. Galleon and High Glee will no doubt carry the bulk of the money.

Ashburton County Racing Club A decision to reinstate the Ashburton Cup on the programme for the autumn meeting on May 14 was made at a meeting of the committee of the Ashburton County Racing Club, at which the chairman (Mr E. B. Newton) presided. The stake for the race, including the cup, was fixed at £350. The total stakes for the day will amount to £I3OO, an increase of £125 on last year’s meeting. It was decided to apply for the following dates for the 1938-39 racing season:— September 17 for the spring meeting, November 26 for the summer meeting, May 13, 1939, for the autumn meeting, and June 24, 1939, for the winter meeting. Reappearance

Shillelagh Wood, runner-up to Nocturnus in the last Grand National Steeplechase, is expected to reappear at the Birchwood Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday. A southern report states that this Woodend mare has built up following a good spell, and is doing well in work at South Hillend % Galleon at Oamaru

The Invercargill-trained gelding Galleon will be an interesting contestant in the Oamaru Cup to-day. He has not been overtaxed since his narrow defeat by Studley Royal in the recent Dunedin Cup, and his success in the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap, but F. W. Ellis understands what is required to keep this somewhat delicate son of Paladin tuned up. Galleon, who is somewhat on the leg, should make a reasonable attempt to carry his impost. At the same time it is considered that he-may do better at Riccarton if called upon to contest the Great Autumn Handicap. A Good Hurdler

High Quality, who was trained for a short period at Riccarton last winter, and who recently resumed work at Ellerlsie after a spell, is coming to hand in encouraging style, his progress being such that a quick return to form is ' predicted. High Quality is a good-class hurdler, capable of winning in any company, and if he remains sound his. prospects during the remainder of the season look hopeful. Elderslie Yearlings The draft of yearlings from the Elderslie stud for- the Sydney yearling sales to be’ held 'On April 19, 21, and 22, includes'the following:—A chestnut filly by Glenariff (by Valais) from Chiefara by Chief Ruler from Nottava by Solferino; a bay filly by Iliad (by Swynford) from the imported mare Princess Argosy, by Haki, a grandson of St. Simon; a bay colt by Iliad from' Fleeting by Boniform from Snowstell by Clanranald; a chestnut colt by Night Raid (by Radium) from Lytup, by Clarenceux from Flame, the gnaddapa of Fha* Lafiiachfistaut colt

ACCEPTANCES

(PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGEAM.) AUCKLAND, March 22. The following are the acceptances for the first day of the Bay of Plenty Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday (win and place betting):—

TROTTING NOTES

Reminders Nominations for the Ashburton Trotting Club’s autumn meeting will close at 8 p.m. to-morrow. The final payment of £3O for the Inter-Dominion championships must be made by 5 p.m. to-morrow. Trained at Forbury Park

New Ideal, a Forbury Park candidate for the trotting events at the Oamaru meeting, had his final trial on Monday (writes a Dunedin correspondent). His task was 10 furlongs, and from a moving start he ran the distance in 2min 48sec. It was a good workout. His owner, Mr J. Richardson, arrived from Melbourne on Monday and will be at Oamaru to-day to see his horse race in the Redcastle Handicap. His trainer, M. Clare, expected to have another in Great Joy at the meeting, but he was not registered in time to be eligible to start. Spelling Stamina has always been missing from Becky Direct’s displays, and although she has been given plenty of time she appears to have made little improvement in this respect. She has been in minor placings on several occasions, and she gave promise of soon winning a short race, but it has been decided that more time will be to her advantage, and she is to be given a long spell. Agile, who has done a good deal of travelling and racing, is also on the easy list, but it will not be long before the chestnut pacer is again in work.

Moana Tama Nothing strenuous has been asked of Moana Tama since he raced at New Brighton last month, when he finished out of a place for the first time since being taken over by G. Mouritz. and he is doing well on light work. If present intentions are carried out he will not race again until Easter, when he will be nicely placed in the slower classes to be decided at Addington.

Championship Trial A Championship Trial Handicap was to have been decided at Melbourne on Monday, and engaged were several horses likely to be seen out at the big meeting at Addington next month. These included Dan’s Son. who in the championships at Adelaide registered 3min 21sec for a mile and a half on a very small track. He has done little racing for 12 months, but is a likely starter at Addington. Another acceptor was Joy’s John, who finished third to Dan’s Son and Wrinkle in the final of the Adelaide Championships. He has a record of 2min 14sec for a mile. Wonga Pronto (2min Msec) and Picador (2min 13£ sec), regarded as certain starters at Addington, were also booked to start at Ascot.

by Night Paid from Lady Violet, by Boniform from Vicereine by Birkenhead; t a bay filly (sister to Homer) by Iliad from Quadrilateral, by Square Measure from Poltara; a chestnut filly by Iliad from Gobble, by Tea Tray from Fulsome by Absurd, and a bay filly by Iliad from Corn Queen, by Night Raid from Rosalita by Rokeby. The draft was shipped to Sydney last week in charge of Mr K. Austin, who will thus be absent from this week’s meeting of the Oamaru Jockey Club, of which he is president. It was reported recently that Iliad was to be offered for sale in Sydney, but it has been decided that he will carry on at Elderslie. Sold Great Memory, a three-year-old by Magnus—Retrospect, has been sold by Sir' 'Charles Clifford to Mr A. Lee, of GreymdUth. She will be sent this week to the West Coast, where she will be raced by her new owner at the autumn meetings. Gelded

The three-year-old Nightdress, who has failed twice since he was bought from Sir Charles Clifford a few weeks ago by Messrs A. S. Elworthy and D. W. J. Gould, has been operated on, and when next he races after a spell M Will fee as ft gelding,
