The Minister for Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) was engaged on private and departmental business in Christchurch yesterday and returned to Wellington by the steamer express.

The health of his Excellency the Apostolic Delegate (Archbishop Panico) is much improved. He expects to leave Auckland to-day to take part in the Catholic centenary celebrations at Hokianga.—Press Association. Mr Ronald Woods will leave this evening to join the Rangitiki on a business trip to Great Britain and the Continent. He expects to be away until the end of the year. Mr E. H. Andrews has returned to Christchurch after attending the annual conference in New Plymouth of the New Zealand Municipal Association as a delegate of the Christchurch City Council.

Mr L. D. J. Smith, of the staff of the Magistrate's Court in Christchurch, who has been appointed Clerk of the Court at Dannevirke, will leave for the north this evening.

Major-General J. E. Duigan, Officer Commanding the New Zealand Military Forces, will arrive in Christchurch from Wellington this morning.

Lieutenant-Colonel G. Barclay, Dominion Chief Commissioner of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, arrived in Christchurch from the south by the express yesterday afternoon. Mr Clyde Carr, M.P., Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., Mr T. H. McCombs, M.P., and Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., were passengers for Wellington on the steamer express last evening.

The Hon. T. F. O'Byrne, M.L.C., left for Wellington by the steamer-express last evening. Mr T H. Langford, No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority, left for Wellington last evening to attend a conference of transport licensing authorities.

Dr J Hight, rector of Canterbury University College, left for Wellington by the steamerexpress last evening. Mr W. S. Jones, Clerk of the Court at Wanganui who has been transferred to Christchurch, will be bidden farewell by the members of the Wanganui Law Society this morning. The police also intend to make a presentation to Mr Jones. Mr H. Cox, who will leave by the Rangitiki on Thursday for a trip to England, was bidden farewell at a social by members of the Shirley Methodist Church, of which he has been a member and office-bearer for many years. The Rev. C Strand presented Mr Cox with a leather week-end case from church members, and Mr J. H. Yarr and Mr J. Pugh spoke of the services of Mr Cox to the church.

Mr C W. S. Cox, manager of the Bank of New South Wales at Dunedin, is retiring on superannuation, and will be succeeded by Mr J R H. Caiman, who is due to arrive in Dunedin to-morrow. Mr Cox has been manager of the Dunedin branch of the bank since October, 1928 He joined the bank in February, 1891, at Christchurch, and has thus completed 47 vears' service. Mr Caiman, who has had wide and varied experience in the bank, has been a branch manager in Melbourne since 1935. "The Press" Special Service.

The ashes of Captain R. M. Kane were committed to the sea in Cook Strait on Saturday night from the steamer express, Wahine, which he formerly commanded. The burial service was read by Captain W. Whitefield andthe urn, covered with a Union Jack was held by Chief Officer E. S. Meatyard and Second Officer J D. Creighton. The ship's crew attended the ceremony, and the Minister for Labour (the ceremony Armstr , Captain E. Larisley (Government Surveyor of Ships at Lyttelton), and a cousin of Captain Kane were also present.
