OPEN GATES ON ROADSIDE

LAXITY AMONG FARMERS ALLEGED INCONVENIENCE TO DROVERS Alleged laxity among farmers in -hutting their gates was the reason lor a suggestion at the last meeting of the Temuka Farmers Union that the attention of the Geraldine County Council be drawn to the inconvenience which drovers suffer when stock has to be chased back along long lanes which are left open to the roaway. t "It is convenient for all of us to leave our gates open, but it is no good for others." said Mr J. McCoy, who brought the matter up. He thought the County Council might be asked whether it had power to act. "We are. treading dangerous ground when we want to interfere with people's private affairs," said the secretary, Mr G. H. Mulligan, "but I am quite 'in favour of taking action over gateless lanes." "Although it is very inconvenient on a busy day, I am against going straight to the authorities about it," said Mr A. E. Dobson, "and it seems to me to be a thing the farmers should see to it among themselves." Mr W. H. Staniland considered that it would be very difficult for a local body to enforce any regulation. The final decision was that the council be asked whether it had any jurisdiction over private lanes which had no gates. Mr Staniland also spoke of corner hedges that were not cut back enough, and said that in the interests of motorists the County Council should be asked to enforce its by-law. "Some seem to leave their corners high just to annoy people," said Mr McCoy. RANGITATA GORGE HIGHWAY GOVERNMENT GRANT TO BE EXPENDED WORK TO BE BEGUN SOON The work of improving the Rangitata Gorge road, which gives access to he ice fiilds where many people enjoy Skating in the winter months, will bfegin soon. When the matter was discussed at a meeting of the Geraldine County Council, the chairman (Mr K. Mackenzie) said that the Government hacl made a grant of £IOOO (£3 for £1) for repairing this road. A sum of £3OO had been voted and could be spent immediately. . The County Engineer (Mr J. K. Hawcridge) said that he had inspected the road to the county boundary m company with Councillors F. R. Flatman and J. Acland. The road was then in very fair condition, he said, and it was quite obvious that were the road required merely for the use of county settlers, no particular difficulty would be experienced in keeping it in repair The whole length of the road —about 10 miles—would be reshaped by the diesel grader and would then be built up with gravel. The sites of Chapman's creek and Middle creek bridges had been inspected, he said, and surveys would be made to enable detailed proposals to be prepared. Mr H. M. Barker, Ben McLeod Station, wrote end Dring a plan of a proposed new Ranpitata Gorge road. He, said he would shortly walk over the proposed route and supply the council with more complete information. LARGE SALMON TAKEN GOOD FISHING IN MILFOTtD LAGOON A fish that was described by arwellknown Temuka salmon fisherman as the best specimen of quinnat salmon ever seen in the district was on display in the town yesterday. It weighed 361b, was 44 inches long, and its girth was 29 inches. Mr Frank Williams, of Temuka, took it in Milford lagoon on Friday night. Fourteen salmon were taken over the week-end at the lagoon, and among the successful anglers were Messrs J. Foster, O. Hanifin, G. McCullough, T. I Tresize, J. Rickus, and J. Connolly.
