RAIL TRAFFIC AT WAIMATE

OUTWARD SERVICES REVIEWED INCREASE IN PASSENGERS SHOWN A substantia] increase in the number of persons who travelled from Waimate by the railway passenger services during the month ended on March 5 as compared with the figures for the same period last year is shown in figures supplied yesterday by the staticnmaster at Waimate (Mr F. B. Dawson). During the month the total number of passengers was 1196, and for the same period last year the total was 932. . iU An increase is also shown in the number of cattle that have gone from the district. Mr Dawson said that live stock was moving very freely, especially lambs, and he thought the exports of sheep would be high for the next six weeks. The figures for the export of sheep show a slight decline, the total for the month being 7121 as compared with 7459 for the same month in 1937. The weights of ordinary goods which include grain and wool, that have gone from the station are almost the same for the two periods, althougn there has been very little gram sent from the district during the last avo weeks During February last year 381 tons of general goods were railed away and this year the total was 3b7 tons. The. rain last week stopped the carting of grain, and it is expected that there will be big consignments this week.--Early, last week an order for trucks to carrv 10OO : tons of grain was made, but so far none of it has gone. CHILDREN IN HEALTH CAMPS MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS ADVISED The necessity of having children medically examined before being admitted to health camps was emphasised by members of the Waimate Hospital Committee at its monthly meeting, and it was decided to bring the matter before the South Canterbury Hospital Board. The question arose when a letter was received from the South Canterbury Health Camp Committee asking whether any Charge was to be made for children admitted to the hospital from the health camp at Waimate. The chairman's statement showed that receipts since the last meeting were £227 lis sd, while accounts presented for payment totalled £--; 15s sd. The return of patients showed that 30 males and 22 females were admitted to the hospital during the month, and 31 males and 26 females were discharged. The superintendent (Dr. l. w. Wylie) reported that the hospital had been moderately busy during the month. , , ~ . The house committee reported that satisfactory progress had been maae with the building of the new theatre block and repairs had been made to ■.the floors of the old building, during the month. WAIMATE BOROUGH RATES There is still £2300 outstanding of the total rate of £7593 for the Waimate Borough. Officials at the Waimate Borough Council office reported yesterday that the rate payments were coming in well, but as the period for their collection is later than usual this year, comparisons with the payments to date in previous years could not be given. The penalty will be imposed on March 10. _ An increase is shown in the number of motor drivers' licences issued during the current licensing year as compared with the same period last ' yea/' Up to date, 452 licences have been issued, and at this time last year thetolal was 434 The total numb of licences issued during las,t year was 450.
