ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

TO THE BDITOB OP THE PRESS. Sir, —A letter appearing in "The Press" of Wednesday over the nom-i dc-plume of "Civfe" asks certain questions' regarding the St. John. Ambu- [ lance Brigade, and although a reply from Dr. J. Restell Thomas is em-: bodied in your footnote, it refers onlyi to the St. John Ambulance Association (a different body altogether), and does not answer the questions concerning! the brigade. I I have been given to understand that, | although the association and brigade i form the Ambulance Department of J the Order of St. John, they are, never-1 Iheless, under separate control. If this is correct, can you state why "Civis's" letter was not referred to the officer concerned, who. I am sure, would not hesitate to give all the desired information? —Yours, etc., INTERESTED.

March 3, 1938. I When this letter was referred to Major J. W. Crampton, Officer Commanding the St. John Ambulance Brigade in Canterbury and the West Coast, he said that the correspondent was right in supposing that the association and the brigade were under separate control. Answering questions asked in the letter from "Civis," Major Crampton said that neither the ambulance sisters ("described as nurses in the letter), nor the ambulance men were paid. Their uniforms were provided out of brigade funds and through the efforts of individual members. Public subscriptions were all devoted to the ambulances. J
