CHRISTCHURCH AMATEUR CLUB NEED FOR INCREASE IN MEMBERSHIP "It has become evident that if the club is to function and provide competitor's who will appeal strongly, the existing memberships will have to be considerably increased," states the report of the Christchurch Amateur Boxing and Sports Club to be presented at the annual meeting of the club this evening. The loss of £4O 5s 4d on the working of the year was attributed to many counter-attrac-tions and a reduced membership. Toward the end of the season there was difficulty in getting sufficient contestants. Seven amateur tournaments were held dv the club, including an inter-associa-tion tournament with Ashburton, in which Christchurch won by four contests to three. Two professional contests held at English Park by outside promotion, under the jurisdiction of the club, resulted in heavy financial loss, and a third was scheduled toward the end of the season, but could not be held. Canterbury title winners were:—J. Murfitt (fly-weight), N. Fisher (light-weight by default and welter-weight); J. Haines (middleweight), W. Lister (light-heavy-weight), and T. O'Gorman (heavy-weight). The club was represented at the New Zealand amateur championships at Greymouth by J. Connor (feather-weight), N. Fisher (light-weight), and T. O'Gorman (light-heavy-weight and neavy-weight). Although no titles were won, each member of the team fully justified his selection. The Fairbairn challenge cup for the boxer showing most improvement during the season was won by T. O'Gorman, and the challenge trophy given by Mr J. Thomson for competition among trainers, awarded according to the success of their pupils at the club's tournaments, was. won by Mr J. Musson with 13 winners. ,
