TURF GOSSIP

Westland Racing: Club At a meeting of the committee of the Westland Racing Club last week, the treasurer reported that the receipts for the recent race meeting were £2244 lis 3d, and expenses £2453 lis 9d, leaving a deficiency of £2OB 0s 6d. Those present agreed to make a special contribution to the funds of the. club. An offer by Mr F. Keating; of Reefton, to give two gold-mounted whips for drivers in trotting events at the club's next meeting was accepted with thanks. Dates for next season's racing are to be applied for as follows:—Christmas meeting, December 28; summer meeting, February 25 and 27, 1939. Australian Sires For the half-year ended January 31 Heroic (by Valais) heads the list of successful sires in Australia, having got 37 winners of 82 races worth £24,955. Manfred (by Valais), 31, 49, and £18,494; Pantheon, by Tracery), 23, 44, and £15,411, Spearfelt 40, 61, and £12,917, and Chief Ruler (by The Tetrarch), 14, 22, and £11,318 are the next on the list. Qualifying Hunters Dissatisfaction with the qualifying of certain horses for hunters' flat races •was expressed at the annual meeting of the Taranaki Hunt Club last week. It was resolved to sponsor a motion to the New Zealand Hunts' Association recommending that no horse be allowed to compete in a hunters' flat race until it has completed the course in a recognised point-to-point or in a hunters' steeplechase or hurdle race. North Island Trip Valmarch is having a North Island programme mapped out for him. He ■will be a competitor at the Wellington autumn meeting, and will then go on to Awapuni for the Manawatu fixture. There is a possibility that a trip to Auckland will follow, but Riccarton at Easter may be preferred. His trainer, W. Hancock, has another promising horse in a brother to Dismiss. He will race as Disband, but is very green as yet. Hancock has had three successful trips to Trentham, and Valmarch should enable him to maintain the record. " *,. Tauramai The Dunedin Guineas, Dnnedin Cup, and C.J.C. Great Autumn Handicap winner, Tauramai, has been at Endeavour Lodge (Invercargill) for some months under the care of J. A. Rowland, who has been treating him for an enlarged foreleg joint. During last week the gelding has been at the Southland tracks for easy exercise, but it is evident that the trouble referred to has not been overcome, as he has a limp. With the tracks now yielding, Tauramai may train on, but the chances are against his doing, so. Well Earned Respite It is understood that Ortyx has been returned to her owner at Riverton, and will be given a well-deserved spell, says the "Southland Times." The Lord Warden filly has done much more racing than most two-year-olds," and the manner in which she has . come through it says a great deal for' her gameness. She has been in solid training for nearly 12 months, and has won only one race, but she has an unusual number of placings to her credit. She has proved herself a brilliant filly, and although she acted sourly when produced at the last Dunedin meeting, she is likely to overcome this with a good spell. Ortyx has everything in her favour to develop into a high-class winner with age. Golden Miller Returns Miss D. Paget's steeplechaser, Golden Miller, who is not in this year's Grand National, won the Prince's Handicap Steeplechase at Sandown Park on January 13. According to newspaper accounts of the race, Golden Miller was never seen to greater advantage, and his latest rider, N. Nicholson, is likely to be on him in all his races this season. Golden Miller, who had 12-7, was top-weight in a field ot 10, and started at even money. A Cheap Mare Messrs Thompson and Basche, New South Wales studmasters, have no occasion to regret paying 600 guineas for Modiste II (dam of Royal Chief) and her colt foal, in New Zealand early last year, the youngster having developed in a manner that justifies a belief that he will realise an amount considerably in excess of the one mentioned, says an Australian newspaper. He is a beautiful brown by the highly successful Son-in-Law horse, Beau Pere, whose stock sold so well at the recent Trentham sales. Queen of the Turf Cuddle "has probably run her last race, states the Wellington "Post." After the recurrence of joint trouble while doing her final gallops for the Wanganui Cup she has been thrown put of training and it is very unlikely that any further attempt will be made to prepare her for racing. There is just an off chance that she will return to her'box next spring, but it is so remote that her trainer, T. R. George, said during the week that one might write finis to her notable career. She has done sufficient, however, to be named 22i?*lF the first 10 - if n °t among the first five, queens of the Australian and £fw i? eala i n £ tu . rf - In stake winnings only Desert Gold, Carlita, Wakeful, and

No Comparison ""Peter Pan's two-year-old sister, Tinker Bell, who is one of E. D. Lawson's team at Randwick, is well developed, and more than average interest will attach to how she turns out. As her dam Alwina was trained at two years, biit was not reckoned good enough to race, and her second and third dams did not distinguish themselves, she is not favoured by her sex. In colour she is brown. Not many mares produce two really high-class horses, and while Peter Pan's halfbrother. Brazilian, is more stylish in appearance than the former, there is, up to the present, no comparison between them as racehorses. Hard to Believe

A notice in the English "Racing Calendar" last month shows that some owners in that country have strange ideas to what debars a horse from competing. After his rider had weighed out for him in a hurdle race at the Sedgefield meeting a horse did not 1 go to the post. The stewards held an inquiry, and the owner stated that the jockey had lost his can after being weighed out, and he (the owner) was under the impression that a horse could not start without the jockey wearing a cap. The owner was fined £5 and was cautioned to be more careful in future. Mated at Elderslie

Sweet Agnes, owned by Mr F, W. Hughes, Kooba, New South Wales, has this season been on a visit to Iliad in New Zealand. The mare is being returned to Australia this month. Sweet Agnes was an Oaks winner in New .Zealand. Carry On, winner of the Australian Cup, is also being sent back to Australia after a visit to Iliad. A Doubtful Theory

The English writer "Audax" ("Horse I and Hound") is one of those breeding .authorities who are of opinion that best results are obtained from mating stallions and mares of the same age. "This," he says, "I discovered quite accidentally years ago, and when I first published my opinion I received a saucy letter from a would-be critic. I replied to his note to the effect that if he did not agree with my views. I would bet him £IOOO, or any t>art of this sum. that a study of the English Stud Book could not show any other theory that was equally successful. From him I heard nothing, further. Naturally, the numbers of horses which can be so mated are comparatively limited, and I should not as a rule advocate it being followed With horses, say. older than 15." Like anv other theory, howevet\ there are snags in it for breeders. It certainly cannot always hold good, even though the average of successes is greater than from any other theory.

TROTTING NOTES

Reminders Acceptances for the Timaru Trotting Club's meeting will close at 9 p.m. today. The single-pool system of betting will be in operation at the Timaru meeting. Acceptances for the Cheviot meeting will be received up to next Monday. Nominations for the New Brighton Challenge Stakes, 1939, will close on March 17. „ Nominations for the Greymouth meeting will close on March 22. Train Arrangements For the Timaru Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday, a special train will leave Christchurch at 8.3 a.m. and will arrive at the Washdyke racecourse at 11.12 a.m. It will stop at Addington, Sockburn, Hornby, Templeton, Rolleston, Dunsandel, Rakaia, Ashburton, Hinds, Orari, and Temuka. Passengers from Chertsey will travel by the 9.9 a.m. train and join the special train at Ashburton. The return train will leave Timaru at 5.28 p.m. and is due at Christchurch at 8.50 p.m. A special horse train will leave Christchurch at 6.40 a.m., arriving at the racecourse at 10.30 a.m. The return train will leave the racecourse at 6.20 p.m. R?hand:caps For the Timaru Trotting Club's meeting to be decided on Saturday the following rehandicaps have been declared:— ~_ Temuka Handicap: Mont dOr penalised 60 yards, now 60 yards behind. Seadown Handicap: Norham Lady penalised 12 yards, now 12 yards behind. A Consistent Pacer Norham Lady, a winner at the Invercargill meeting on Saturday, is trained by P. Gallagher, Washdyke, and before this win she had been placed three times in four starts. At the Forbury Park meeting last January she beat all but Policy, and went 3min 19 4-ssec for the mile and a half, while at the recent New Brighton meeting she was third over a mile and a quarter in 2min 47 3-ssec. Norham Lady is a five-year-old mare by Wellington Direct, the sire of Fenella, a winner at Wellington on Saturday. Cheviot Cup The Cheviot Cup has drawn the good nomination of 16 horses, and with a short limit of 36 yards a good race may be expected. Possibly the field wili be reduced when acceptances are made; but indications point to the field being bigger and of better class than any that has contested the race. Four horses have been handicapped to give away 36 yards, and these include two improving pacers in the American colt Fremont and Old Faithful, a winner at Timaru and New Brighton. Both have performed like stayers, and their presence in the field will add interest to the race. Fremont has been nominated for the Wyndham Cup, which will also be decided on March 19; but it is more than probable that he will fulfil his Cheviot Cup engagement. Molly Direct has also been nominated for the Cheviot Cup and the Wyndham Cup and possibly she will represent the R. B. Berry stable in the south. Storm Signal, a useful young pacer in C. K. Yeatman's care, won two races at Greymouth recently, and he is a likely improver, while Royal Doulton, Hidden Charm, and Ace High have the: necessary credentials for a race like the Cheviot Cup, which promises to provide the best contest in the history of the race. FENELLA REHANDICAPPED <PBES3 ASSOCIATION TtLEGRAU.) INVERCARGILL, March <7. For his win at Hutt Park on Saturday Fenella has been penalised to 60yds in the Trial Handicap at the Wyndham Trotting Club's meeting." Vague Particulars In all his racing to date this season Shangri-La has been carded as a three-year-old. But reference to his registration reveals that he is four years old, and also that his breeding is different from that given in the Wanganui and Taranaki cards. Shangri-La is registered as a 1833 black gelding by Gaßcony out ot Tribuness, a 1927 mare by Tribulation out of Haetingi. Neither Haetingi nor Tribuness ever raced, Tribuness being named only when registration " was sought for Shangri-La. In race cards Shangri-La has been given as by Gascony out of Haetingi, the dam really being the grandam, with the name differently spelt from what is registered. Haetingi, who was bred in 1914, has been ascertained to have been by Advance out of Ohutu. Evidently there is much vagueness about Shangri-La, which might be the reason for the name. When first registered he was a brown: now he is a black, which appears his right colour. He was bred by Mr, W. F. Wellwood. of Hastings, from whom he was bought by the late Ron Alexander. The Hon. G. R. Hunter and the Hon. P. C. Webb secured him from the estate of his former owner-trainer, end they gave away a third interest in him to Mr J. Corcoran before handing him to H. Gray to prepare for racing.
