NOTES ON THE RACING Always In Front Passenger' drew No. 1 at the barrier in the Motukarara Juvenile Stakes, and moving off smartly soon had a break on the field. He was followed round the home turn and into the straight by Flame Queen, Neatherlea, Lady Middlcham, Kindly, Plumage, and Night Hawk, all of these being fairly in line. Passenger was never in danger of being overhauled and won without any pressure. In a close tussle for second honours, Nctherlea lasted to hold off Kindly with Lisnacree a neck away in front of Flame Queen. Night Hawk, Lady Middleham, Nigella, Gaoler, Romarin, and Scuffle in that order. Although Passenger paid a big price, his win was very popularly received. He made a remarkably fast beginning and always had his pursuers in trouble, Neatherlea moved off fairly well, but had no chance of getting near the winner. Kindly was not prominent until turning for home, and she did well to get into the money. Lisnacree made a creditable showing after being slow away; r An Overdue Win

Dracula, carrying a penalty of 71b owing to being ridden by a flat race jockey, went to the front after a furlong had been covered in the Terawera Highweight handicap, and was never headed. He was followed into the straight by Grampian,- Elmarch, Nightdress, Rabble, and Flashlight, and of these Elmarch was the only one to issue a challenge. Elmarch finished solidly and had Dracula doing his best, but the latter was able to hold on for a neck verdict. Three lengths away. Rabble, Flashlight, and Grampian finished in a bunch, with Contract, Gold Boy, and Gasmask next. Dracula won well, but was all out to beat Elmarch, who stayed on better than previously. Rabble had every chance, but was beaten a good way from home. Flashlight put up a creditable performance as he lost a good deal at the start, and was well back entering the straight. Nightdress was prominnet until a furlong from home, and then returned to a rear positionErehom Wins Becky Direct, Erehom, _ and Boreas were the early leaders in the Wairewa Trot, but Boreas led the field into the, back straight. He then broke up and Erehom shot to the front and led into the straight from Becky Direct and Attain, with Acuity moving up from a rear position. Erehom went on for an easy win from Acuity, who got up to beat Becky Direct. Attain was two lengths away in front of St.raieht and Joe Perkins. Sovereign Lady’s Cup The Peninsula Cup provided a most interesting race throughout, and four of the seven contestants finished in a bunch. Sovereign Lady went to the front from barrier rise and slowed up the bunched field for the first two furlongs. Studley Royal then went from last to first and was joined in the lead at the six furlong post by Davolo, and the pair led into the straight, just in front of Waitaka. Sovereign Lady, and Glenogil together, with Some Shamble and Silver Ring close up. Davolo had Studley Royal in trouble a furlong from home and then Waitaka, Sovereign Lady, and Glenogil became prominent. Davolo was still in front 50 yards from the post, but just as Waitaka headed him, Sovereign Lady put in her claim, and in an exciting struggle, the last-named

got up in the last two strides to gain a head verdict from Waitaka, who beat Davolo by a similar margin, with Glenogil a neck away. Studley Royal was two lengths back in front of t Silver Ring and Some Shamble. Sovereign Lady was always well placed and put in some remarkable work over the final two furlongs. Waitaka appeared to have the race won nearing the post, while Glenogil also looked likelv, but Sovereign Lady finished too solidly. Davolo’s supporters had every reason to be pleased when he headed off Studley Royal, but he weakened over the business stages. The slow i pace early was no good to Studley Royal, who virtually pulled himself to the front. He was still going freely entering the straight, but did not last long in the run home. Glenogil made an attractive showing, and no doubt this will encourage her owner to send her to Ellerslie for the Great Northern Oaks. Silver Ring was never danger- j ous. He made a promising forward j move in the straight, but could not go on. A Speedy Filly Financiere and Nightcalm closely disputed favouritism in the Ahuriri Hack Handicap. Nolana was the first to show out, but Financiere soon went to the front and had a clear lead from Nolana. Delium. and Nightcalm, turning for home. Nolana looked to be getting Financiered measure entering upon the last furlong, but the latter stuck to her task and won attractively. Nightcalm did good work in the straight to gain third place, from Rotokino, who was not prominent until nearing the end. Glenacre, Delium and Love Affair followed wuth Great Memory in last place. Financiere created a big impre.sion by her convincing win, her third in succession, Nolana ran one of her usual sound races. Nightcalm dwelt slightly when the barrier lifted and did not seem to be able to improve from his early fifth position until turning for home, but although finishing well into third place, he had too much ground to make up to trouble the leaders. Rotokino came from well back to head the remainder, who were well strung out at the post. Kinloch Handicap Linguist was the first to show out in the Kinloch Handicap and tried to win all the way, but after leading into the straight she compounded. Linguist was followed into the straight by Metal Bird. Double Gift. Grey Honour, Lady Graceful, and Dictate, the last horses being Ponty, Wino. and Wine Card, who were the slowest to move out from the start. Grey Honour made a fastxun as soon as he was headed for home, and was in front at the distance. He was not afterwards troubled, to win from Lady Graceful, who finished resolutely to beat Double Gift in the last few strides. Dictate was a length away, a head in front of Swordstick. Then came Roy Bun. Linguist, Metal Bird. Wino. Ponty. The Masquerader, and Wine Card, in that order. Grey Honour bad a decisive win. He had not had a win for some months, and. considering the recent better form of several of his opponents, his position as favourite was somewhat surprising. but evidently justified. Lady Graceful met with a check in _ the back stretch and also in the straight, and her second was a creditable performance. Unfortunately she was lame on returning. Double Gift was alwayr well up. Dictate gave 'the leaders a big break turning for home, and was unable to get within reach of them. Swordstick looked likely at the distance but failed to carry on. Rpy Bun disappointed and so did Ponty. and Wino. Wine Card struck trouble early and was sent back to last place. Waihora Trot Stylish Boy was the early leader from Mont d’Or and Wax Vestas in the Waihora Trot, and be carried on through the back stretch from Mont d’Or, Wax Vestas, and Karoro. Mont d’Or then went to the front and led into the straight from Wax Vestas, Karoro. Evora, Stylish Boy, Sunny Jack, and Donor. Mont d'Or maintained his lead for the remainder of the journey and won comfortably from Wax Vestas. Donor, one of the rear division over the first mile, put up a sterling performance to work his way into third place at the post from Karoro, with Evora, Jovial, and Stylish Boy next. Reymere broke shortly after the start and interfered with Chelidon, who brought down Llewellyn's Pet Maroha Returns The result of the Forsyth Hack Handicap was a surprise for investors, as the three place-getters were only in moderate demand. Bright Prospect. Happy Night, and Gold Coat were the slowest to go off, and Potent took up the running from Bellerive, Dracula, Nolana, Happy Night, Great Bramble and Maroha. There was "not much change into the straight, but Potent soon surrendered his position and Nolana, Great Bramble. Maroha, and Happy Night were fairly well bunched 100 yards from the post, with Bright Prospect making an appearance from the rear. A hard struggle ensued, Maroha staying on the best to win by a neck from Bright Prospect, who beat Great Bramble by a slightly wider

margin. Happy Night was a fair fourth in front of Gold Coat and Bellerive. This was Maroha’s first win for a long time. Bright Prospect was the unlucky horse of the race, as he lost valuable ground early and was in last place during the middle stages. He would have beaten Maroha in another stride or two. Great Bramble ran a solid race and is a likely improver. Happy Night was never able to recover from his unfavourable early position. Potent failed to stay and both Nolana and Dracula no doubt felt the effects of their earlier races.

MEMORIAL TO MORELLO [From Our Own Reporter.] WELLINGTON, March 5. The Wellington Trotting Club was favoured with splendid weather for its meeting on Saturday, and a hard, fast track was responsible for very fast times being registered. The attendance was very good, and the totalisator investments, amounting to £25,090, represented an increase of £2064 10s on the £23.025 10s invested at the corresponding meeting last year. Morello put up a fine performance to win the R. A. Armstrong Memorial Handicap, and two victories to Walter Wrack gave him his fourth win in his last four starts at Hutt Park. NOTES ON THE RACING "Walter Wrack (n Form Walter Wrack, who had won in his last two starts at Hutt Park, performed the hat-trick when he made an exhibition of the field opposed to him in the Randwick Handicap. It was a poor race, won by an outstanding trotter in the class he was set to meet. , _ . King Franz, Welcome Guy, Arapai, Triangle, and Reward was the order once the field settled down. Grade Fields having refused to trot steadily. With three nirlongs covered Welcome Guv assumed the lead and commencing the' last round he was in front, ahead of Arapai, King Franz. Triangle, Reward, and Walter Wrack. The lastnamed made a very fast run to the front before the three furlongs post, and none of the others appeared able to go the pace set. Walter Wrack came into the straight with a lead of six lengths, and without an effort he maintained it to the finish. He won very easilv, while Welcome Guy with a late run got to within half a length of Af/tpst. The winner was not bustled over the earlv stages, in which he made a break which, cost him little ground. The driver. R. B. Berry, merely waited on the field and made a halfmile race of it. The time. 3min 25sec, represented an improvement of nine seconds on his assessment. Arapai trotted solidly, but Welcome Guy's display was marred by two breaks. Triangle showed little speed, and Reward failed to show his true form. Trouble at the Barrier Fenella and Scwana caused considerable delay and excitement by their antics at the start of the Autumn Novice Handicap, but eventually the former got away smartly and was in front practically all the way. From the outside of the field Fenella was the quickest to strike her gait, and she had as her nearest attendants Transwell and Prince McElwyn, while Sans Pared was slow to move. In the back stretch Sans Pared put in a fast run, and with half the distance covered he was in third place behind Fenella and Transwell, while most prominent of the remainder were Sewana and Acceleration. Three furlongs from home Fenella shot away and led into the straight with a comfortable lead from Transwell. Fenella was being touched with the whip a furlong from home, when Transwell broke and made the win an easy one. Guy Zolock finished well to beat Sans Pared for third place, but the performance was not very impressive. Fenella is very erratic and inexperienced, but possibly racing will settle her down. On this form she is no champion, but may improve. Transwell is not a nice-actioned pacer and does not possess much speed, while Sewana is temperamental and apparently cannot stay. The remainder added little interest to the race. A Consistent Pacer Marlene gave the field in the Wainui Handicap 24 yards and, nicely placed early in the race, she scrambled home ahead of Intrigue, while the unlucky horse of the race was Connenora, who just beat Effle Parrish for third place. Connenora began very quickly and led Happi, Intrigue, and Dusky Sound, but soon Happi raced to the front, and at the end of half the journey had Effle Parrish, Connenora. Marlene, Spessiva, and Intrigue as her nearest attendants. As the straight was reached Happi had had enough, and Marlene, Effle Parrish, and Intrigue all ranged alongside, while Connenora was securely hemmed in on the rails. 1% a hard finish Marlene held on to win narrowly from Intrigue, while Connenora got up to beat Effle Parrish for third place. Next to finish were Diversion and Ropata. Marlene thoroughly deserved her win because of the consistency she has shown in her races. She may not be a champion, but she is honest and has speed. Intrigue, another honest racehorse, put up a good fight, but possibly the best horse in the race was Connenora, who had a bad run over the concluding stages. Effle Parrish ran her usual solid race, but Eyre was never going comfortably. Diversion showed a glimpse of her best form, and there is hope for Ropata. A Good Display Morello was in front at the end of three furlongs in the R. A. Armstrong Handicap and, making his own pace, he stalled off a challenge from Blair Athol and won by a clear margin, althou i he was doing his best at the finish.

Frisco Lady was the quickest beginner, but after establishing a lead of six lengths her driver, J. Bryce,> jun., wisely eased her into second place, and Morello took up the running ahead of Frisco Lady, Willie Derby, Blair Athol, and Fernbrook Lass. The field carried on in this order for another round, Morello doing it easily in front of Willie Derby, Frisco Lady, Fernbrook Lass, and Blair Athol. Frisco Lady, racing behind Morello, with Willie Derby on the outside, was followed by Blair Athol hemmed in on the rails. Willie Derby did not fail until the straight, at which stage Morello put on a break of four lengths. He raced for home and was under the whip as Blair Athol put in a sensational run nearing the post. He, too, had had enough, yet he defeated Frisco Lady by a good margin. Following the placed horses were Fernbrook Lass and Agile.

Morello might have won in any circumstances, but it appeared that the running of the race did not favour Blair Athol. The field did not open out as his driver expected. Morello, however, had to make all his own running, and there was a lot of merit in his performance. Frisco Lady did not finish on like a real stayer, and possibly a shorter journey will always suit her. Lady Fame broke at the start, and while she caught her field she at no stage looked like a winner. Agile, slow to begin, finished fifth, a useful effort. Flacings Reversed The Palmer Handicap, for unhoppled trotters, was a race full of incident, and while Welcome Guy finished just ahead of Walter Wrack, it was not surprising to find the placings of the first two horses reversed, because of the galloping of Welcome Guy over the last 50 or 60 yards.

Gracie Fields this time began smartly, and carried on from Welcome Guy, King Franz, Triangle, and Reward, all of whom had a chance as the last circuit was commenced. Walter Wrack, who had begun smartly, showed great speed, and raced up to his field, but a break cost him ground. Another brilliant qffiQFt ja the negtt

Triangle, second favourite, raced like a second rater, Gracie Fields met with interference. and her chance may have been affected. The remainder did not add interest to the contest. Sewana Improves Sewana gave another bad exhibition at the barrier in the Taita Novice Handicap, but he did not lose much ground at the start, while another "circus” performer in Fenella turned round as the barriers were released, and took practically no part in the race. Bingen's Best was quickest away, followed by First Shake and Axminster Bingen’s Best carried on for another half mile, at which stage First Shake, Mongolian, and Transwell were handy. Sewana was gradually making up ground, and coming into the straight was handy to Mongolian, who appeared to be going comfortably. Sewara finished very fast, and was going away at the finish from Mongolian. who fought on gamely to beat Max Havoc.

A Well-earned Victory

Running in the Wainui Handicap suggested Connenora as the winner of the Waiwetu Handicap, and she won very easily after having all the best on the running. Connenora. from an inside position, was the quickest to begin, and in the early stages was followed by Ropata. Intrigue, and Allworthy, and at the end of half a mile Rapata was half a length in front of Connenora, who was followed by Dusky Sound. Effie Parrish, and Eyre. Ropata still led by half a length down the back stretch from Connenora, but the latter always held the inner position, and came into the straight holding her own. She came home full of running, and was never fully extended. Intrigue ran another honest race, while Diversion showed great speed. The placed horses really had the race to themselves, and the remainder did not threaten danger when real business commenced. Brilliant Pacers

Frisco Lady, who had failed over two miles earlier in the day, gave a brilliant display of pacing to win the Farewell Handicap. After the first quarter mile had been covered, Frisco Lady was in command from Willie Derby and Fernbrook Lass, with Frisco Boy just ahead of King’s Play. As the field raced down thie back stretch. Frisco Lady still held command, while Frisco Boy, coming from behind, had King’s Play on the outside of him. Frisco Lady slipped her field as the straight was'reached, and came on to win decisively from King’s Play, who put in a fast run over the last part. Bonny Azure, also doing well at the finish, was in third place, just ahead of Morello, who broke near the post. Frisco Lady had raced well in the R. A. Armstrong Handicap earlier in the afternoon, but failed to stay the full journey. King’s Play went a good race, but he was forced to cover extra ground, and this cost him any chance he might have had. He is a very fine pacer, but might not have won under any circumstances. Morello looked likely to win 100 yards from the post, but in being pulled out from the rails he went to a bad break that cost him place money.

INVERCARGILL, March 5. A Steady Pacer Katene was one of the few horses <o begin w’ell In the Trial Handicap, and he led all the way to win very easily. At the end of half a mile Katene was two lengths clear of Dolly Truman, and there was a gap of several lengths to Foremost Junior and Nancy Guy. This was the ' order at the end of a mile, and with three [ furlongs to go Dolly Truman closed on ! the leader and Foremost Junior and Fran- ! sol were handy. Katene drew away again lat the turn and won easing up by six i lengths from Nancy Guy, who came again in the straight and beat Dolly Truman for second money. Kentucky Sun was two lengths away fourth and finishing well. Then came Foremost Junior and Fransol. This was the winner’s ' second start, and he was fancied on the strength of his forward running at the recent Winton meeting when he ran third. He is a four-year-old colt by Great Bingen from Lady Marvin. The runner-up paid more than a score for a place, and the third horse i was also at double figures. The favourite. Provincial;- broke at the start. From End to End Native Kowhai was always in the van in the Murihiku Handicap, and gave nothing else a chance over the last three furlongs. It was a poor race, and more than half the field broke at the start or made mistakes in the running. Native Kowhai and Turi Boy raced away to a good lead in the first six furlongs, and then the former went away on his own and had a lead of six lengths at the half mile from Dalaruan, Turi Boy, and Halesia. Native Kowhai broke three furlongs from home, but did not lose much ground and he came right away In the straight to win easing up by 15 lengths from Dalaruan, who beat the fast-finishing Appomatox by two lengths. Turi Boy was a poor fourth. Appomatox was unlucky as he lost ground at the start and gave the winner a big start in the straight. .. A Good Stayer Nell Grattan was driven a confident race in the Jellicoe Handicap, and making up her handicap gradually, she was third into the straight and won by staying on. Jesse Owens. Prince Charles, and Guywdn broke at the start, and Gold Streak went to a tangle in the first furlong. Happy Locanda and Desert Cloud were the leaders over the first three furlongs, and then Happj’ Locanda went to a break and took a long time to settle down. At the end of half a mile Seaward de Oro joined Desert Cloud in the lead, but with about five furlongs to go Lindrum took charge and Tritoma ran into second place, followed by College Boy and Nell Grattan. The last-named improved her position at the half mile and Lindrum led into the straight closely attended by Tritoma, Nell Grattan, Labour Chimes, and Desert Cloud. In a good finish Nell Grattan stayed on the best and beat Lindrum by ■ a neck. Tritoma was three lengths away third, and Labour Chimes close. up fourth, followed by Desert Cloud. The winner is a half-sister to Rocks Ahead and Aqua Bond, arid is an improving sort. Happy Locanda showed a brilliant turn of speed when he settled down after breaking. A Surprise Victory The Southland Handicap "was an excellent contest, and was a triumph for the eleventh favourite. Vologda, who paid nearly half a century on- the win machine. . . Walter Gay, Coherto. Sliver Laddie, and Glenastle broke at the star, and Moko Child took up the running from Voloma Leitrim. Frisco Silk. Trlcliff. and Roan Duke. Voloma joined the leader at the end of three furlongs, and with nine furlongs to go Night Voyage took charge from Aqua Bond, Voloma, Roan Duke, Moko Child, Leitrim, and Twenty Grand. The first mile took 2min 23 3-ssec, and" with six furlongs to go Aqua Bond * was a length clear of Night Voyage, who was closely followed by Roan Duke, Voloma, Leitrim, Tricliff, and Twenty Grand. Inside the next furlong Roan Duke ran to the front from Aqua Bond, and with half a mile to go Twenty Grand moved into third place in front of Voloma. Racing across the top Lynwood and Vologda made a forward move, and the order into the straight was Roan Duke, Lynwood. Aqua Bond. Voloma. Twenty Grand, and Vologda. Roan Duke looked all over a winner at the distance, but Vologda finished fast on the rails and got up to beat him by a neck. Voloma was two lengths away third, and Aqua Bond was close up fourth. Then came Embark, Harold Guy. Twenty Grand, and Trlcliff. The winner had a lucky run on the rails in the straight, but finished better than anything else. Twenty Grand collided with Walter Gay at the start and broke a wheel of the latter’s sulky. Twenty Grand stopped badly over the last three furlongs. A Good Performance Directly scored a meritorious win m the Coldstream Handicap, for he lost ground at the start and then won going away. Edith ,Grattan made the earlv running from Seascape, Picotee. and Crown Peak, and with five furlongs to go the leader was three lengths clear from Directly, who was just shading Seascape and Crowri Peak. Racing past the three furlongs post Directly and Seaward de

Oro closed on Edith Grattan, and De» benture moved up fast. This was die order into the straight, but once the leader* straightened up Directly forged to the front and beat Crown Peak decisively by a length. Edith Grattan , was half a length away third, and then came. Capri, King Drusus, who broke at the start, Dewey Star, and Debenture. ■ An Easy Win The Waiktwi Handicap was a duel between Native Kowhai. who was penalised 24 yards for his win -in the MurihikH Handicap, and Jimmy Drusus. The pair were always well dear, and with half a mile to go Anna's Voyage ran into third place, but broke. At this stage Jimmy Drusus and Native Kowhai had a lead of 12 lengths, and when Native Kowhai broke at the home turn Jimmy Drusus was left an easy winner by six lengths. Native Kowhai beat Imperial Wave just as easily for second money. Turi Boy was a moderate fourth. It was a poor’ race. Tbe Favourite Wins A hot favourite in Norham Lady was In a prominent position all the way in the Visitors' Handicap, and she justified this confidence by scoring a decisive win. Dewey Cloud, Bonnie Brydone. and Baqgg Locanda broke at the. start, and Gold was the early leader from Norn. B Lady, Vinola, Overproof, ai.d Jean DenjnH In the back stretch Sydney Grand JHB Gay Avon made a forward move: .and JW|I half a mile to go Real Glad was "closely followed .by Overproof, Vinola. Sydney Grand, Nprham Lady, and Gay Avert Racing across the top Grattanella moved up fast and Real Gold dropped out. The order into the straight was Vinola. Sydney Grand. Norham Lady, and Grattanella. The last-named challenged strongly at the distance, but broke, and Norham Lady shot through and beat Sydney Grand by three-quarters of a length. Gay Avon was half a length away third, and Lindrum dose up fourth. Another Good Price Walter Gay was never further back than third in the Au Revoir Handicap, and when it came to business he never left the issue in doubt. Loyal Sim led out from Tricliff and Walter Gay, and with five furlongs to go Loyal Sun -was a length in front of Walter Gay. Roan Duke. Tricliff, and Twenty Grand. This was the order into the straight, and m the run home Walter Gay drew to die front and won full of running to beat Twenty Grand by a length. Roan Duke was half a length away third, and Loyal Sun close up fourth. Night Voyage and Tricliff were next The winner paid nearly a score en the win machine. CHEVIOT T.C.
