HARRY BRIDGES ARRESTED
♦ COMMUNISM CHARGES PREFERRED FORMAL HEARING FIXED FOR APRIL 25 (Received March 6, 10.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON. March 5. Harry Bridges, ‘.he Labour leader, was technically arrested at Baltimore of charges of Communism, and was released to appear at a formal deportation hearing at San Francisco on April 25. Bridges denounced the charges as the work of convicted felons, stool pigeons, and perjured witnesses, but said he welcomed the hearing because it would prove to the American public that “this and similar Red-baiting campaigns have only one purpose—to destroy the labour organisations by attacking their elected officers." The charges against Bridges are based on the section of the Immigration Act requiring the deportation of aliens found to be members of or affiliated with groups which advocate the overthrow of the Government by force or violence, or circulate literature advising such doctrine.
Bridges denies that he is a member of the Communist Party.
