The Minister for Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) arrived in Christchurch from the North yesterday morning. The Hon. Hobbs, of Christchurch, president of the Dominion Federation of Justices of the Peace Associations, left on Saturday night for New Plymouth to, preside over the annual conference of the federation on March 9, 10, and 11. Mr A. V. Bedwell, assistant-engineer to the Christchurch Tramway Board, has received advice from the Engineers’ Registration Board that he has been gazetted as a registered engineer under the Engineers Registration Act, 1924. At its meeting on Saturday morning the board extended congratulations to Mr Bedwell. The Rev. John Flynn (“Flynn of the Inland”), who became widely known through the book in which he described his missionary work in the desert country of Central Australia, is visiting New Zealand and expects to be in the Dominion for some weeks. Lieutenant-Colonel G. Barclay, Dominion Chief Commissioner, St. John Ambulance Brigade, will arrive by the south express to-day. Mr Harold Flett, of the Sydney office of the Orient Line, has been appointed passenger superintendent for the Orient Line in Australia and New Zealand, with headquarters in Sydney. Mr J. J. Hurley, president of the Canterbury Justices of the Peace Association, and Mr George M. Teller, vice-president of the association, will leave this evening for New Plymouth to attend the annual conference! of the Dominion Federation of Justices of the Peace Associations. They will be accompanied by Mr W. Jacobsen, president of the Otago association. Dr. W. R. B. Oliver, Director of the Dominion Museum, Wellington, will leave Auckland to-day by the Mariposa on a tour of the world which is being financed by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. After visiting many of the chief cities of the United States, Dr. Oliver will go to England, Norway, Sweden, Germany, -Belgium, Holland, and France. He will return to Wellington at the end of the year.

The Rev E C. W. Powell, who has been in charge of the Waikari Anglican parish since his return from England in January, will begin duty as vicar of Oxford on the resignation of the Rev. H. F. Ault at the end of May. Mr C. G. Lamb, who joined the Christchurch Tramway Board’s service 25 years ago, has tendered his resignation as chief traffic clerk from March 22 because of ill-health. The board has recorded appreciation of his services. Mr ID. McKenzie, assistant-traffic clerk, will succeed Mr Lamb as chief clerk.
