TENNIS AT RANGIORA MATCH AGAINST KAIAPOI The Rangiora B team beat Kaiapoi by 10 sets to 6 in a North Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association match on Saturday. Results (Rangiora names first):— Men’s Singles—Carpenter beat M. Lilley, 9-4; Nash lost to K. Halhgan. 7-9; Robertson beat A. Hirst, 9-5; Doggett lost to L. Robson. 2-9. Womens Singles—Miss Kirwm lost to Mrs Eves. 3-6; Mrs Robertson lost to Miss P. Pearce, 0-6; Miss N. Clark beat Miss O. Pearce, 6-1; Mrs Johns beat Mrs Bain, 6-4. Men’s Doubles—Carpenter and Nash beat Lillev and Hirst, 9-8; Robertson and Doggett lost to Halligan and Robson, 6-9. Women’s Doubles —Miss Ktrwin and Mrs Robertson lost to Mrs Eves and Miss P. Pearce, 4-6; Miss N. Clark and Miss Johns beat Miss O. Pearce and Mrs Bain, 6-4. Mixed Doubles—Carpenter and Miss Kir win beat Lilley and Mrs Eves, 9-7; Nash and Mrs Robertson beat Hirst and Miss P. GOLF RANGIORA CLUB There was a large attendance of members and friends at the official opening day ceremony of the Rangiora Goll Cluo on Saturday,' The weather was ideal ano the golfers found the course in good condition for play. A mixed foursome flag match for the presidents trophies was won by Mrs Bacon and R. A. Triggs. The runners-up were Mrs McDonald and R. J. Hegan. KAIAPOI CLUB The official opening of the Kaiapoi Golf Club’s season was held on Saturday afternoon. The president. Mr A. W. Leithead. welcomed the visitors and said the club was beginning its thirty-first season's play with a full membership. It had been decided to close the men’s membership but there were still a few vacancies in the women’s section. The fairways had been kept mown all the summer and the course was in excellent older. The additions to the club house were proving a great benefit to members and visitors. He declared the season open by driving the first ball. During the afternoon members and visitors were the guests of the president and Mrs Leithead at afternoon tea. A combined flag match was played, the winners being R. H. Tait and Mrs Tail, who carried the flag to the twelfth fairway. WEATHER AT KIRWEE There was a total rainfall of 1.48 in at Kirwee during February, with rair falling on eight days. The maximum fall on any one day was 43 points on February 4. During the same period last year a total of 3.16 in fell on 15 days, with a. maximum fall of 79 points on February 12. The total fall for the two months of this year was 3.34 in. compared with 6.21 in for 1937. and 8.86 in for 1936. when 7.80 in fell in February. CRICKET KAIAPOI V. WOODEND Kaiapoi scored an eight-point win in its match against Woodend on Saturday afternoon. Continuing the innings, Kaiapoi scored 235 runs, F. T. Capstick 124, A. Hopkins 38. R. Taplin 18. A. Jones 15, H. Oram 12. Bowling for Woodend, R. Ballinger took four wickets for 34 runs, and T. Gibbs two for 24. Woodend. in the second innings, scored 132 runs. C. Smith 38. A, Smith 20, T, Gibbs 18, W. Hampton 10. L. Southen 10. Bowling for Kaiapoi. R. TapUn took four wickets for 22 runs. C. Martin two for 19. and H. Carter two tor 41. Kaiapoi in the second innings made 22 for the loss of one wicket, F. T. Capstick 14, not out. AKAROA PLUNKET SOCIETY The members of the Akaroa Plunket sub-branch held a successful gift shop on Friday, when more than £lO was raised, the proceeds being for the Karitane Extension Fund and the Akaroa Society’s funds. The competitions resulted: —Dinner ("given by committee and Mrs C. C. Narbey). won by Mrs W. A. Newton, cake (given by Mrs J. P. Mcßride) won by Miss Janet Gumbrell: chocolates (given by Mrs S. C. Naismith). won by Mrs F. A. Hammond. AKAROA SILVER BAND The progressive euchre party held in the Fire Brigade Hall in aid of the Akaroa Silver Band was well attended. For the ladies’ first prize Miss C. Narbey and Miss P. Ferris tied, the former winning the play-off Mr W. H. Priest won the men’s prize and the consolation winners were Mrs F Wright and Mr J. Davis. Messrs J. Prendergast. jun.. and A. Hayward were in charge of the cards tournament.
