OTAGO TRACK AND FIELD TITLES

NOTABLE PERFORMANCE BY A. A. CAMERON

ELEVEN NEW HOLDERS OF CHAMPIONSHIPS

DUNEDIN. March 6. The defeat of T. Allen and A. R. Geddes. Empire Games representatives, in the half-mile and the three miles, the establishing of three new records, and the brilliant performance of A. A, Cameron m securing four first and two second places, were the oustanding features of the annual Otago track and field championships, held at the Caledonian ground in fine but windy weather this afternoon. H. J. Tyrie was the only Empire Games representative to show anything like top form, and he established a new Otago record by winning the 440 yards in 50 1-5 sec. Allen was sensationally beaten by R. McLachlan In the half-mile in 2min 2 l-ssec, and Geddes, after winning the mile In the slow time of 4min 39sec, was defeated by 150 yards in the three miles by tire veteran, J. H. McLaren, In 15mln 25sec.

A. A. Cameron, North Otago all-rounder, was the most successful athlete, establishing a new Otago record of 41ft 21n In the shot putt and winning the broad jump, hop, step, and jump, and the discus throw, besides being second In the high jump and the hammer throw.

M. R. Spillane, another reinstated athlete of the Empire Games class, won the hammer throw with 162 ft Sin. His throw of 155 ft 6Jin was previously the best performance by a New Zealander. It is doubtful If his performance will be recognised because of the assisting wind, but the other two Otago records were not established with any assistance from the wind. There were 11 new title-holders, the List shield going to the Civil Service Athletic Club.
