NEW RAILWAY STATION

* ELEVATION PLANS NEAR COMPLETION HUGE GOODS-SHED TO BE BUILT AT WALTHAM The elevation plans for the new railway station for Christchurch are almost completed, and the preliminary engineering activities on the site, including the old station and an area toward Madras street, suggest that the official announcement of the start of the building and layout of lines will not be deferred for long. The preliminary work now done is the clearing of ground and the sinking of test foundation pits. The operations are under the control of an engineer who has been transferred from Wellington to Christchurch. The first big construction job which will be undertaken is the building of a massive new shed—double the size of the big D shed in Carlyle street —at Waltham. When the department began to acquire properties in Mowbray street and* Falsgrave street, the proposals were to use the extensive yard solely for shunting and storage and the alteration of the plans to provide a site for the huge goods-shed was brought about so that, when the new station was being built, with a consequent alteration of lines, the existing services would not be interrupted.
