WEST COAST The following is the forecast for the West Coast of the South Island:— Moderate southerly to southeagerly winds, freshening north of Westport. Thc weather mainly fair to fine- Temperatures cool to medcrate. Seas slight to moderate. DOMINION The following is the Dominion foreeast:— t Plainly fair to fine in the westV'ern and southern districts of the South Island, elsewhere cloudy to overcast, with showers or misty rain in many places, but some heavy rain developing in the nor- • them half of , the North Island, particularly in the far northern 'and north-eastern portions. A rather deep cyclone is centred today cast of Norfolk Island, and appears to be moving south-cast-wards. An anti-cyclone of slight intensity covers the South Tasman Sea, and extends on to southern New Zealand. Winds—Easterly in the far north, otherwise southerly to south-easterly prevailing, mainly light to modera'tc at first, but freshening about and north of Cook Strait, and gales probable in the northern districts. Seas (New Zealand waters) —Becoming rough to high north of East Cape, elsewhere slight to moderate, but later rising north of Farewell Spit and Kaikoura. Eastern Tasman Sea— South-easterly winds predominating, strong and of gale force at places in | the northern portion, with rough seas; light to moderate in the southern portion, with slight to moderate seas. CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER I ' Rain fell in Christchurch yesterday, there being a drizzle most of the day, [ with occasional fairly heavy showers. There were a few fine intervals, but the sky was overcast all day, and the temperature cool. A light southerly wind was blowing. The rain continued at night. The maximum temperature was 56.8 degrees. Meteorological observations taken at the Magnetic Observatory, Christchurch, on March 4: —

The barometer fell slightly, the 5 p.m. reading being 29.86 inches. Wellington—The weather was overcast, with intermittent light rain in the early morning. Conditions improved during the afternoon. Dunedin—There was bright sunshine in the morning, with a slight breeze from the south-west.
