AUSTRALIAN CUP CONTEST AT FLEMINGTON TO-DAY SENSATIONAL RACE RECAL.U3D The Victoria Racing Club's autumn meeting will be concluded to-day, when chief interest will be held in the Australian Cup, of £3OOO, run over two miles and a quarter. This is the longest distance handicap event in Australia, and dates back to 1863. The race of 1872 is well remembered, for two dead-heats had to be run off before the winner was declared. In the original race Saladin (7-8) and Flying Dutchman (7-5) had a desperate struggle all the way up the straight, and, amidst great excitement, the judge declared a dead-heat. The owners decided to run off; long odds were laid on Saladin. Another dingdong struggle ensued, and once more the judge declared a dead-heat. The two horses were saddled up for a third trial, a shade of odds being laid on Flying Dutchman, but the upshot ot a game struggle was a long-neck victory for Saladin. Gruelling Efforts The three races exacted from Saladin and Flying Dutchman on that autumn day 65 years ago meant a journey of six miles and three-quar-ters for the two horses, and, admitting that they were a hardy pair, the effect upon them of a third gruelling finish can easily be recognised. We live in a different age now. and such a proceeding as that which marked the Australian contest in 1872 would now be scouted. •WELLINGTON R.C. NOMINATIONS Excellent nominations have been received for the autumn meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, to be held on i March 17 and 19. The total is 348. an increase of 81 on the 287 nominations received for the corresponding meeting last year. Thirty-flve horses figure in the Thompson Handicap, including performers of the calibre of Smoke Screen, Silver Ring, Stretto, Paper Slipper, Catalogue, and Brazen King. The St. Leger Stakes has drawn a field of only five, but two of these are Courtcraft and Royal Chief, a further meeting between whom would be one of the attractions of the fixture. The Crooner will also add interest to this race. Twenty sprinters have been entered for the Railway Handicap, including proved performers like Paper Slipper, Brunhild, Siegmund, and Laughing Lass. TURF GOSSIP Not Divided Ephod was yesterday withdrawn from the Motukarara Juvenile Stakes, and the provision made for running the race in two divisions will not now be required. Sold for Queensland The three-year-old gelding Haerepo, by Nigrdmareh from the Chief Ruler mare Azalea, has been sold by his oreeder, P. V*. Mason, to Mr W. T. Kelly, of Brisbane, for about 700 guineas. Haerepo won three races, including two at Ellerslie, for Mason, and although he has not done a great deal of racing, he has shown marked ability, and is the makings of a highclass four-year-old. For Trentham Riccarton stables have a strong representation in the nominations for the Wellington Racing Club's autumn meeting. The list is as follows:—Rousseau, Kindly, Lady Leigh, Good Passage Gaoler, Spendthrift, Defaulter, Paper Slipper, Studley Royal, Grey Honour, Ponty, Davolo, Dictate, Nightcalm, Lazybones, Sparkle, Financiere, Great Memory, Happy Night, and Royal Chief. Fink Coat Juveniles Mr D. Grant, of Timaru, has sent two Pink Coat yearling colts to D. Cotton to train at Riccarton. One is a bay from the Autumnus— Telescope mare Seaside, dam of Rebel Mate, and the other a chestnut from Miss Muffet, by Tea Tray from Bo Peep, by Bezonian. Both youngsters were broken in before leaving' home, and ehow a good deal of promise. Likely Placegetter Mr L. W. Storry will be represented by two candidates, Chanteur and Romarin, in the Motukarara Juvenile Stakes to-day. Chanteur is a big framed four-year-old gelding by Robespierre from Grey Linnet, dam of Songbird, and although at times showing promise, 'he will require some racing to disclose his worth. Romarin is a two-year-old filly by Robespierre from the speedy Limelight, whose previous progeny included Joyous and Ilias. Romarin is endowed with the family ability, and provided she gets away on anything like favourable terms to-day she will take part in the finish. Riding Engagements Riding engagements as follows have been made for to-day's programme at Motukarara:—A. C. Messervy: Great Memory, Dracula, Gay Parade. J. Murfitt, Flame Queen, Drinkup. L. J. Ellis: Studley Royal, Nolana, Kindly, Grey Honour. M. Caddy: Gold Coat, Nigella, Roy Bun, Glenogil, Glenacre. G. Linton: Clubman. A. Stove, Grampian. R. Beale: Elmarch. G. Humphries: Scuffle, Lady Graceful, Ephod, Great Bramble. A. Parsons: Rotokino, Gaoler, Supreme Court. A. Russell: Delium. L. Pratt: Gasmask. H. Hibberd: Swordstick, Financiere, Bright Prospect, Shooting Star. A. K ■Ellis: Passenger, The Masquerader. Polistina. G. Elliot: Maroha. J. Veevers: Flashlight. E. Jennings: Gold Boy. A. Messervy: Love Affair, Dividend, Waitaka, Romarin. D O'Connor: Rabble. P. Spratt: Night Hawk. G. Ridgway: Nightdress, Silver Ring. J. Jennings: Linguist, Sovereign Lady, Plumage, Potent. C. Wilson: Davolo, Neatherlea, Double Gift, Bellerive W. Jenkins: Happy Night. Nightcalm. Dictate, Chanteur. A Record Breaker When Ajax led the field home in-the Newmarket Handicap carrying 9-0, at Flemington last Saturday, he eclipsed the three-year-old weight-carrying race record, which stood to the credit of Cranbrook for 50 years. ' Ajax's next engagement is in the C. M Lloyd Stakes, which event is set for decision to-day. The race carries a stake of £IOOO and is run over a mile at standard weight-for-age. Gold Rod Fails The disappointing form displayed by Gold Rod in recent races places the New Zealand horse once again well under the searchlight. His victory in the Epsom Handicap run at Randwick in the spring was so highly extolled that he was sent out a warm favourite for the Craven Plate, his next race within a few days. To the general disiHiay he finished unplaced: and. his eon-

nexions, it was stated, were completely puzzled. The big chestnut was subsequently ' withdrawn from all spring engagements, and was rested for a couple of months. Galloping satisfactorily in his training work he was started for the St. George Stakes at Caulfield, for which he ruled second favourite, but failed to get closer than fourth. In the Futurity Stakes he shaped poorly, and in the decision of the Essendon Stakes he finished last. Hua's Defeat The victory of Elanage in the King's Plate run at Flemington on Tuesday can in. itself be viewed as a surprise; but the incident receives a more sensational dash, because of the pronounced defeat of the Derby winner. Hua, who finished last in a field of three. The race was run at standard weight-for-age over one mile and

three-quarters, and the three contestants carried 8-2. In the decision of the Essendon Stakes, one mile and a quarter, on the opening day, Elanage was stated to have hung out badly in the final stage, and he was beaten by Damalis by two and a half lengths. On trial form it looked the reverse of promising for Elanage in the King's Plate, especially as he • was called upon to run an additional half-mile. However, honours were completely on the side of the New Zealand-bred colt. Hua's Dronounced defeat suggests that he has deteriorated rapidly, and this week's defeat places him under a cloud. foE the present at least.

TKOTTING NOTES At Hutt Park The weather in Wellington yesterday was warm and sultry with light rain, but prospects were for good conditions for to-day's racing. The track is hard and fast, and a good shower of rain would-be appreciated. Disappointment is.felt at the absence of the Auckland trainer, F. J. Smith's team, for generally he appeared to have a royal . chance of winning more than one race. It is probable that Smith will make an extensive tour of the South Island, -and will be represented at Timaru and Ashburton before the inter-Domin-,ion championships at Addington next .month. Auckland visitors to Wellington have a very high opinion of Smith's four-year-old Cavan Chief, ■ by Travis Axworthy, and he is expected to enter the best classes. Nervie's Last, too. is regarded as a much better pacer than when he last appeared at Addington, and he is expected to win over at least one dis- , tance in the big tests. New Brighton Representatives The New Brighton representation at Wellington to-day will comprise the two unhoppled trotters, Reward and Aristotle, and both horses were taken north on Thursday night, and given easy work yesterday. Reward has been trotting particularly well under G. Cameron's care, and a win is overdue. He must have a chance in either race in which he starts to-day. Aristotle, converted from the pacing gait, has enough speed to wjn the Palmer Handicap, but is not yet reliable, and bad breaks have cost him at least two races. He is on the improve, however, and looks well enough to win any race. Westport Trotting: Club Lack of transport facilities has been the big drawback for meetings held in Westport, but efforts are being made to improve matters. During the last few days several members of the Westport Club have been in Christchurch, and have arranged for several motorfloats to make the trio for the meeting on April 9 and 11. These floats will take horses direct from Christchurch to Westport, and afterwards will run a service from the railway to Westport. A number of Canterbury trainers have promised to make the trip because of the improved facilities. Early Arrivals F. G. Holmes, R. Motz, G. Cameron, G. S. Smith, and V. Leeming were -amongst the trainers who arrived at Hutt Park yesterday, and their horses, Mongolian, Aristotle, Reward, Agile, and Effle Parrish, were given useful work. Agile looks particularly well, and is expected to race well in both his engagements. tfoith Island Trained ■NT A i J Di ? g , er P r °P° rt ion than usual of North Island horses will contest the races at Hutt Park to-day, and it is Pleasihg to note the number of horses trained m and round Wellington, not I s a ru , le i¥ a v , erv strong trotting centre. One of the best of the local division may prove to be Sewana, a brother to Roi 1 Or trained by L. O. Thomas. ■^ w £" a has & eai ? speed, and has been working particularly well. Another

pacer of whom good things are expected is Relax, by Acron from Rescue, trained by the owner, W. L. J. Cleverley, at Hutt Park. A Strong TJeam M. B. Edwards has a team of four engaged at Hutt Park to-day, Frisco Boy, Frisco Lady, Connenora, and Wee Potts. All appear to be in great order, and Connenora is fancied for today's engagements. The Frisco pair will race well, and Edwards looks like carrying on his excellent record at Wairarapa.
