PENSIONS FOR ORPHANS

REMOVAL OF ANOMALY SOUGHT

[From Our Parliamentary Reporter.!

WELLINGTON. March 1

The attention of the Minister in Charge of Pensions (the Hon. W. E. Parry) was drawn to the fact that m pension is allowed to orphans in cases where the mother dies before the father and on the death of the latter the children are left without fi.nancia? support by Mr R. A. Wright f Independent. Wellington Suburbs), in a notice of a question in the House of Representatives to-day. Mr Wright asked whether the Minister was aware of this position, and whether it was proposed to introduce legislation to correct this anomaly. “It is admitted that the Child Welfare Department takes charge of orphans left destitute,” Mr Wright said, “but if the pension now granted to children whose mothers are widows were allowed in those cases where both parents have died, other relatives would willingly accommodate and educate the orphans and relieve the Child Welfare Department of all responsibility.”
