OBITUARY

MRS JOHN FOSTER The death occurred recently of Mrs John Foster, the last of the foundation members of Knox Presbyterian Church, Bealey avenue. Mrs Foster was born in the Island of Bute, Scotland, in 1857. After her marriage in 1878, Mr and Mrs Foster i decided to settle in New Zealand, and after a three months’ voyage in the sailing ship' Waikato, they settled in the Merivale district. Mrs Foster had lived in the Merivale district continuously for the last 60 years, and had seen the district grow from’ a waste of tussock and swamp to a thicklypopulated suburb. All her life Mrs Foster has been an ardent supporter of church and social service activities, and was a pioneer in many of the women’s movements. She was a foundation ■member of the Band of Hope in Christchurch, and was a life member of this organisation. A ffuent speaker, Mrs Foster was associated with the Mothers’ Union ot Knox Church, which commenced its activities 36 years dgo, and during that time she gave a weekly address to the mothers’ meeting which now averages a membership of 100 at each weekly meeting. . . Mrs Foster was' a member of the Mayor’s Coal and Blanket, Fund .Committee for mbre than a score of years, and held the record for long service, only relinquishing her activities a few months ago. She received the long service certificate from the New Zealand Presbyterian Assembly for more than 30 years’ continuous service as a Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of the Canterbury Pilgrims’ Association. Mrs Foster is survived by four daughters, one son, 17 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. ■ The funeral took place at the Addington Cemetery, Many floral tributes were received. MRS M. ANDERSON The death of Mrs Margaret McDonald Anderson, which occurred recently, removed another link with the early settlement of Otago. Mrs Anderson, who was born at Dunedin 81 years ago, was the third daughter of the late Mr Hugh McFadgen. who arrived at Dunedin by the ship Mariner in 1849, afterwards becoming the first Town Clerk of North-East Valley. Mrs Anderson’s marriage to Mr Samuel Anderson was celebrated at Dunedin in 1878 by the late Rev. Dr. Stuart. Shortly after- their marriage Mr and Mrs Anderson went to Timaru, where they lived for more than 40 years. They came to Christchurch about 12 years ago. Mrs Anderson Is survived by her husband, three sons, two daughters, and two brothers.

The funeral took place at the Bromley Cemetery, the services at the house and graveside being conducted by the Rev. J. Lawson Rpbinson.
