EXPORT OF FISH TO AUSTRALIA
WELLINGTON FIRM SEEKS LICENCE (F&KSB ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM. 1 WELLINGTON, February 28. A scheme which, as well as bring- „ ing a considerable amount of money to Wellington, will benefit Wellington fishermen and those at Picton during the summer, has beenf placed before the Bureau of Industry by • Wellington fish firm, which seeks • licence to export fish to AustraliaIt is estimated that at least 200 cases of fish a month would be accepted by Sydney and other markets, and should the licence be granted it is proposed to exploit the Cook Strait and French P 358 grounds for blue cod and groper. As the demand for fish on the New Zealand markets decreases by about half in the summer, some fishermen find themselves out of work. In Wellington, it is said, about a score of fishermen have to seek relief employment during those months. If this scheme is adopted, these and about 50 other fishermen will have year-round employment at their trade.
