SPRINGS BOUGHT IN AUSTRALIA
MINISTER’S REPLY TO MANUFACTURERS ONLY SMALL PROPORTION IMPORTED (TBKSS ASSOCIATION TELEOBAM.) AUCKLAND, February , 28. Referring to Auckland manufacturers’ complaints about the placing of a contract for laminated springs for railway waggons in Australia, the Minister for Railways (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) said to-day that the order was only for 2000 out of 68,000, the rest being manufactured in the railway workshops here. The local manufacturers’ quotation was less favourable than the Australian tenderers, even after the 10 per cent, preference allowance was made on ; local prices, and the delivery proposed was not as satisfactory. The Australian prices approximated closely to the Railway Department’s own . estimate. Nevertheless, the Government’s policy was to place orders in New Zealand whenever possible, and in the last few months - orders placed with Dominion manufacturers for railway needs totalled £44,630.
