MALE HAIRDRESSERS’ AWARD

INDUSTRIAL DISPUTE SETTLED The industrial dispute between employers and employees in the male hairdressing trade in North Canterbury was settled in Conciliation Council yesterday. An award was agreed on, providing for a week of 44 hours, journeymen to be paid £5 a week. The award will operate from March 31 for one year. The Conciliation Commissioner (Mr S. Ritchie) presided, and the assessors were:—Employees: Messrs J. S. Barnett, H. Hopkirk, and G. H. Perkin; employers: Messrs D. I. Macdonald, G. Finney, H. C. Woodward, and L. V. Brian. Provision was made for a 44-hour week, beginning not earlier than 8.15 a.m., and ceasing not later than 5.30 p.m. on ordinary days, and ceasing at 8.30 p.m. on Fridays and 12 noon on Saturdays. Provision was made for varying the hours during Christmas week. It was agreed that the saloon door be locked at the hour of ceasing work, but that the assistant be given the right to attend to one customer other than the customer in the chair at the hour of ceasing. The award provides for journeymen and improvers. Apprentices are provided for under the Apprenticeship Order made by the Arbitration Court. The weekly wages for journeymen were fixed at £5 and for improvers in the first year £2 17s 6d and the second year £3 17s 6d. Casual workers are to be paid 2s 7Jd an hour, with a minimum of Bs. The ordinary employment is weekly.
