UMPIRES’ ASSOCIATION FORMED

ENTHUSIASTIC SUPPORT BY DELEGATES

An Umpires’ and Linesmen’s Association was formed at the quarterly meeting of delegates of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association last evening. Brought forward by the management committee of the association, the proposal was enthusiastically taken up by delegates, who pledged the support of dubs. „ , . , The following officers were elected: —President, Mr P. H. Jones (Riccarton)* vice-president, Mr J. W. M. Dart (Methven); secretary, Mr Trevor Wilson (Elmwood). A committee of nine was appointed, and it was decided that all officers should remain in office until the first general meeting of the new association. The president of the tennis association (Mr R. A motion was passed placing the onus on the constituent associations to forward to the secretary of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association at Wellington, not later than June 30. in any year, the names of players considered worthy of ranking by the associations. together with a certified list of players’ performances. The New Zealand girls to-day met a team from the New South Wales Hard Court Association, and won by live rubbers, 11 sets, to three rubbers, eight sets. _ , Results—Miss Cooke (New Zealand) beat Miss Coleburne, 6-3, 6-0; Miss Kelso beat Miss Hodges (New Zealand), 6-3, 8-6; Mrs Morgan beat Miss Armstrong (New Zealand), 6-3, 7-5; Miss Rice beat Miss Douthett (New Zealand), 6-0. 6-2; Miss Beverley (New Zealand) beat Miss Stebbing, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5; Miss Wilson (New Zealand) beat Miss Prior, 6-1, 8-6. Doubles—Misses Cooke and Hodges (New Zealand) beat Misses Coleburne and Kelso, 6-3, 1-6. 6-3; Misses Armstrong and Wilson (New Zealand) beat Miss Prior and Mrs Morgan, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1- Misses Beverley and Douthett New Zealand) v. Misses Stebbing and Rice, 4-6, 7-5. The last game was not finished because of. fading light.
