A Close Finish Half heads separated the first four horsey in a thrilling finish in the Manawaru'Hurdles, the each-way favourite Desert Star getting through on the inside and winning in the ‘'last two Strides from Englishman, who would probably have won only for hitting the last fence hard. However, Desert Star lost even more ground when he made a bad’ jump along the back. Bryce Street and Huskie ran fine races, and the latter was going strongly right at the end. Some of the public demonstrated against the judge’s decision. An Improver The improving Monacre scored decisively in the Elstow Handicap from the consistent Te Monowai, who has rarely ran a bad race. Monacre was always handily placed after a good beginning, and ran on splendidly in the straight. Her form has been very consistent, and in her last three starts she has recorded a second and two firsts. * Te Monovfai drew No. 14 at the barrier, and had not the best of the running, having to go on the outside most of the way and be well out Toun ding the home turn. Maxcwm, after a slow beginning, made up a lot of ground with a solid run on the outside to gain third, and make his best showing to date. Trevace again displayed speed only to weaken near the end. Windcress. after being one of the leaders, and Thala also tired in the run home. The win favourite Galloping Acre was handy most of the way ■without being really dangerous in the straight. . * From End to End Benefited by his race on the first day, the each-way favourite Arvakur scored an end-to-end victory in the Electric Handicap. Arvakur jumped out very smartly and- always had the measure of the opposition, to win very easily. .The only one to give him any trouble ■was. JKathbella. who made a good effort an the straight. Arvakur is a half-brother to the brilliant Stretto, and has fine speed. Vitement battled on gamely at the turn to secure third, and First Gold Money, who registered her best effort to date, was also staying on. Olympus again displayed speed early, and his turn should come when he is a little more seasoned. The first day’s winner, Noitaro, was never prominent. Jonathan in Form The. three-year-old Courtcraft, who was a good favourite on the win machine, attempted to lead throughout the last mile of the President’s Handicap; but Jonathan and Kilonsa were both too good for him at the weights in thje last furlong. Courtcraft made a very courageous showing, and his perfol’mance was good. Jonathan galloped in very free style and made a dashing finishing run to win going from Kilonsa, who fought on valiantly after heading Courtcraft soon after reaching the straight. Mazir battled on solidly to be fourth, and Master Brierly again made up a good deal “[of groynd in the straight. Round Un > sailed to finish with any dash, while Dark Shadow and Gay Rose also ran below form. . Jonathan was one of

the outsiders of the field and paid nearly a third of a century for a win. ’ Lady Meath Wins Capably handled by R. W. McTavish, Lady Meath scored nicely in the Wairakau Hack Handicap, tor which she was third in demand to Llangollen and Lady Montana, who filled the minor places. Lady Meath wailed on the pacemakers. Jan Ridd and feuathire, until reaching the straight, and then came through to win well. Llangollen came home strongly from a lair way back to gain second, and Lady Montana, last at the turn, also made a good finishing effort. Lady Montana may have been closer only for being checked at the top and thus losing a little ground. Vadanoe. who was fairly wide out at the turn, shaped very creditably for fourth. Jan Ridd and Strathire failed to’run on in the last furlong. A Solid Finisher After being in the rear in the early stages Malagigi finished attractively to win the Morrinsville Hack Handicap. Malagigi did not become prominent until"the field approached the home turn, but was always a winner in the last furlong. He is a good staying hack but his legs do not appear to be the best. He will make a useful handicap horse if he trains on. Cometarium, who put up 61b overweight to secure the services of C. G. Goulsbro, made an improved showing, and Dutch Girl ran another solid race, and is improved. Silver River, who pulled hard in the early stages, performed creditably for fourth, being steadied by his weight at the finish. The eachway favourite, Privy Seal, was well placed in third position until the field bunched about half a mile from home, and was checked when the field bunched. She finished strongly without being able to reach a place. The Favourite Th? each-way favourite, Suleiman, won the Farewell Handicap with a little in hand, although he had only a short neck to spare at the finish. The light-weight. Anion, attempted to lead throughout, and ran one of his best races only to be held safely over the last furlong by the improving Suleiman, who is doing better from meeting to meeting. Suleiman, who was a maiden in. the spring, has done well under the guidance of A. Cook, and the best njight not have been seen of him yet. Tosh finished solidly for third, and Golden Sheila, who was a long way back early, made up a lot of ground in the straight to be a very close fourth. Rereatu showed dash for about five furlongs, and then failed to run on. Valamito Scores The each-way favourite, Valamito, scored narrowly in an exciting finish, in the Piako Handicap. Valamito jumped out well and was always handily placed to finish very resolutely and just stall off Prince Rangi, who ran a little wide. Valamito ran right up to his best form and so did Prince Rangi who is much improved. Rulette. after making most of the running, held on solidly for third and Paso Robles was running on in fourth position. Land Girl was prominent for six furlongs but weakened at the end.

TURF GOSSIP

Reminders Acceptances for the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s autumn meeting will close at 5 p.m. to-morrow at the office of the Canterbury Jockey Club; Nominations for the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting will close at 5 p.m. to-morrow. Nominations for the Oamaru Jockey Club’s autumn meeting will close at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jockey Premiership The three leading horsemen, L. J. Ellis, C. Goulsbro, and B. H. Morris, were all successful at Wanganui on the first day, Ellis ■ winning on Shangri-La and Alloa, Morris on Laughing Lass, and Goulsbro on Surmount. On Saturday, at Te Ellis failed to have a win, although he had two second and two third placings. Goulsbro also failed to score, while Morris had a win on Gaily at Wanganui. ( The position of this trio at the week-end was L. J. Ellis 50, Goulsbro 48, and Morris 44. W. Broughton, who . won a race at Te Aroha on Saturday, is- i® _fourt|j,.^lgs.e

with 33, and S. Wilson, who had four wins at Wanganui, has now 30 successes to his credit.

A Mare of Moods Janet CJaynorj, has the punters puzzled, says the Southland “Times.” She was backed in the right quarter to win at Gore on Friday, but finished last. The stipendiary steward explained that he was quite satisfied with the handling of her. A mare of her moods is apt to cause trouble at times. She was not started on the second day. Funds Required While discussing the finances of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Racing Owners, Breeders and Trainers’ Association - recently, Mr H. D. Matthews said it might be worth asking racing clubs to add Is to their entry fees, the amount to be collected cn behalf of the association. Failing this, he suggested asking owners to makd a special donation to the funds wtofifl a

TROTTING NOTES

Reminders Nominations for the Cheviot Trotting Club’s annual meeting will close at 9 p.m. on Thursday. Acceptances for two trotting events at the Banks Peninsula meeting will close at 5 p.m. to-morrow. Change of Quarters L. O. Thomas is expected to take up his training quarters at Addington early next month. He will bring several horses from Huit Par k and will also train a number of Canterburyowned pacers and trotters. Norman Fox Norman Fox has been under the care of several trainers since he was handled by his owner. Mr T. G. Fox, and his latest move is to the stables of G. M. Mouritz at Addington. He is in good order for immediate racing, but is on a mark from which he may find it difficult to win. Trotters at Wairarapa At the Wairarapa meeting on Saturday Princess Beverley outclassed her opponents in the Taralahi Hanoicap. She went to the front after a furlong and was never extended, winning pulling up by two lengths. BiwoiThy put in a fast run to be close with half a mile to go, but he broke and then had time to make up the leeway and beat C'Hint Parrish easily for second. Margaret Parrish chased the winner for a mile and a quarter and then retired quickly. Tonce broke frequently. Princess Beverley was having only her second race and in her first she struck Peggolty, who now looks the makings of a champion. Princess Beverley is a neat little chestnut mare by Native King from Beverley Audubon, and is owned by the Christchurch sportsman, Mr G. Thomson. She gave another faultless display to win the Moroa Handicap. A penalty of 36 yards was no trouble to her, for she went effortlessly to the front at the end of half a mile and treated ail challenges with contempt. Biworthy gave (he race its chief interest, and he gave a capital display to run the winner to half a length. He did not put a foot wrong, and answered every question like a true racehorse. He lias not won a race this season, but has yet to finish out of a place. Tonee was two lengths away third, showing some improvement on his first effort.. Count Parrish and Air Pilot were the 1 only others in sight at the finish. Ztucali Impresses

Zincali fairly outclassed the field for the J. A. McDougall Handicap. His driver, M. B. Edwards, drove a waiting race until two furlongs from home, and when called upon Zincali dropped his opponents and ran out to a fourlengths victory over Golden Moness, who had made all the pace. It was a fast-run race, and all the honours were with the winner, who won as he liked in record time for the course —4min 32 3-sscc. Trevor de Oro began well and was soon well placed. He made his bid two furlongs from home and paced on solidly, but stood no chance of overhauling Zincali and Golden Moness. He had to go 4min 29 3-ssec, his fastest time to date, so he more than endorsed his previous good form. Tan John trotted in his best style and was only half a length behind Trevor de Oro. Slippery Sam was the only other with a chance in the last furlong, and Eddie Tolan stopped badly after forcing Golden Moness to set a solid pace. Sir Frank retired before the straight was reached. Captain Bolt broke early and was always bringing up the rear. Bayard Stays On Crystal Chimes would have won the Carterton Handicap had he been any good, but after getting a dozen lengths’ advantage over Bayard as the result of a snap start, he could not hold out,

and was going up and down in the same place at the straight entrance. Bayard closed on Crystal Chimes two furlongs from home, and made light of Accra's challenge. He won by four lengths, and Accra beat Max Havoc by the same margin. The only other with a chance was Travelwell. The worst sufferer at the start was Playful, who lost 12 lengths. A Fast-run Race

Myrtle Oro, who had been several times placed recently, just scrambled home from Sans Pareil in the Featherston Handicap. Her 2min 47 4-ssec was a good performance for a maiden pacer, and she may win again. She is a scratchy goer, though, and is always liable to tangle when the pressure is on. Sans Pareil was close at the home turn, and he made little impression on Myrtle Oro, who made every post a winning one. Otaua did well to finish third five lengths away after losing 50 vards at the start. He is still a problem on the mark, but L. O. Thomas is gradually improving the Rey de Oro pacer. Myrtle Oro, a four-year-old chestnut mare by Rey de Oro from Myrtlene, was raced at Wellington by Mr W. Hosking, and driven by F. J. Smith. She was placed in all the maiden events, and after the meeting was sold to Mr .1. A. MeDougall, of Martinborough, who placed her with H. McNae.

A Promising Pacer Philario won the Greylown Handicap as he was backed—as a certainly. He allowed Sans Pareil to lead him to the straight, and a couple of cuts with the whip saw him run away from Bayard, who started slowly from the same mark as the winner. Bayard, however, would not have beaten Philario in any circumstances. Max Havoc was a poor fourth. Philario gave M. B. Edwards his fourth win of the day with as many drives. Philario is a four-year-old bay gelding by Jack Potts from - Flossie Harvester, and from the same maternal family come Tom Thumb, Talaro, and Ganier. A Certainty Beaten Golden Moness was a good thing beaten in the concluding event, the Masterton Handicap. She was securely pocketed throughout,; and had to be pulled to the rear in the, straight and brought round on the outside. This cost tier at least six lengths and the race. Slippery Sam had a clear run and beat Lord Wrack by two lengths, with Golden Moness the same margin away. Hori Bingen and Sir Frank, who did all the pocketing, were the last to finish.

Trainers Displeased Trenthara tram era for the main part feel that they were treated very shabbily by the Woodville Club in abandoning its meeting, as the general' opinion is that racing was quite possible on the first day. They are all sending in expense accounts to the Woodville Club, and the majority are very pointed in their assertion that, if they are not reimbursed they will decline.in future to patronise the club. On no occasion in the last decade has there been such unanimity of disgust among the centre’s trainers against the action of any particular club.
