OBITUARY

MR T. WAREHAM-SMITH

AUCKLAND, February 26.

The death has occurred of Mr Thomas Wareham-Smith, aged 63, of London, formerly a director of the "Daily Mail." Mr Wareham-Smith arrived in Wellington on November 5 on a health trip. He visited various health resorts, and came to Auckland, where he lived for two months at the Grand Hotel.

He proposed leaving by the Awatea on Wednesday last for Sydney and London, but was taken ill on ary 16 and cancelled his passage. He entered a private hospital on February 19 in a feeble state. Pneumonia intervened, and, in spite of skilled medical and nursing care, he died at midnight on Thursday. Private cablegrams are awaited from England, where his widow and three children live, before burial arrangements are made. Mr. Wareham-Smith was of high statvding in the newspaper advertising world. He has been described as the brains • behind some of Lord Nortncliff's greatest revenue-producing ventures.

MR ' WILLIAM BARTON WELLINGTON, February 26. The death has occurred at Wellington of Mr William Barton, of Featherston and of the White Rock Station, aged 80. He was the third son of Mr Richard Barton, who arrived by the Oriental in 1840. His mother was a daughter of the Rev. John Butler, who was in the Bay. of Islands in 1818, and built the first church at Kerikeri. Mr Barton was educated at Wellington College and Cambridge University for the legal profession, from which he retired to. take over the management of the White Rock station, which was taken up by his father in 1840. He had many financial interests in New Zealand. He is survived by his widow and five daughters, Miss Marie Barton (England), Mrs B. Quinn (South Africa), Mrs E. Lutyens (England), Mrs R. M. Johnson (Mount Torlesse, Canterbury), and Miss Elspeth Barton (Wellington). Mrs Barton was formerly Mfss,.Lucv Studholme. of Canterbury.
