U.S. NAVY ORDERS 54
HUGE MACHINES
TWO-INCH MACHINE-GUNS TO BE MOUNTED
(Received February 27, 9.15 p.m.)
WASHINGTON, February 27
The United States navy has placed orders for 54 flying-boats similar to the huge four-engined Sikorsky "flying dreadnoughts" which are now undergoing secret tests, says the correspondent of the United Press.
The new so-called "battleships of the air", mount guns capable of firing 200 two-inch shells a minute, being twice as large as any weapon at present mounted on an aeroplane. The aircraft will also be equipped with regular machine-guns and will carry 2000 or more bombs.
