[NOTES ON THE RACING ithe press special service.! j AUCKLAND, February 26. ' „• Sandrift Wilis i The each-way favourite Sandrift scored decisively in the ftuakaka Hurdles from fcthe second fancy, Englishman. Sandrift oved smartly about half a mile from wife and entered the straight In the leading division that comprised Siwell, Celtic Lad, Erihatidn, and Englishman, Who were in very close order. Celtic Lad held just a slight advantage at the last fence, but once the real struggle commenced Sandrift soon took the measure of the opposition and won going away. It was the winner's best effort to date and she is becoming more solid. Englishman ran his usual honest race. Celtiti Lad was responsible for a solid effort and Siwell also recorded a sound performance. Urination was closest of the othei-s and the race may Improve him. Survalyon fell at the first fence. Always Prominent Benefited by her race at Te Bapa, Mon Acre scared nicely in the Waitoa Handicap, for which Galloping Acre was an each-way favourite. Mon Acre was always in the leading division, and after following windcress to the turn she took charge to win from Aynho, who came home very strongly on the outside. The favourite, Galloping Acre, ran on resolutely to be a close third after being a long way back in the middle stages. Trevace looked likely when in IHe lead With Mon Acre With a furlong to go, but weakened into fourth, Windcress displayed plenty of speed, but failed to run on as well as at Te Rapa. where he fought on gamely to defeat Mon Acre. Thala was left at the post and took no part in the race. Juvenile Handicap

Jumping, to the front smartly from No. 1 the little-fancied Noitaro led all the way in the Juvenile Handicap and won very decisively from the each-Way favourite, Kathbella, who was always in close attendance and battled on gamely at the finish. Noitaro is a shapely filly by the speedy Oration and paid .double figures. Kathbella improved upon her Te Rapa form and made a game effort to overtake the winner in the straight. The top-weight, Arvakur, was a little slow away from an outside post position and after going fast across the top came home Solidly, although held safely In the last furlong by Noitaro and Harotonga, who made a Very creditable showing. The second fancy. Calorie, was never dangerous, and Philcourt faded out in the straight after being prominent to the turn. A Brilliant Galloper Having her first race over a middle distance, the brilliant Stretto scored a notable triumph when she won the Herries Memorial cup. She was bracketed on the totaiisator with Manlr, and the bracket was best supported in a fine betting race. After showing out in front early Stretto was steadied in behind the leading division, and when asked for an effort in the straight she reached the lead quickly to score in very convincing fashion over the last furlong. Stretto ran the ll furlongs in the good time of 2min 17 4-ssec, which is only about a secdnd outside Glare's New Zealand record of 2min lSgsee. Kllonsa made a determined bid in the straight and registered a fine performance for second. ,Rona Bay, who was responsible for most of the run-' ning, battled on solidly for third. Master: Brierly came from the rear at the turn, for fourth, making up a lot of ground. King Hey. Kelly, Scotland, and Masif ran disappointingly, Sinking Fund,. Hound Up, and Jewelled 'Girdle were prominent most, of the way, bilt faded ih the straight. A Head Verdict The each-way favourite, Llangollen, finished very 7 resolutely to win.the Shaftesbury Hack Handicap in the last couple of strides. It looked as if Anion would succeed when he took the lead from Miss Te Koura at the foot of the straight and Was just clear at the distance. However, Llangollen wore him down and gained the

verdict by a head. Anion ran one of his beat noes, and Ju»t failed to see it out after being prominent throughout. Te Monowai, Who claimed a 71b apprentices' allowance, fought on solidly for third and Forest Acre showed improvement upon his recent efforts by running a creditable fourth. Lady Montana was running oh and a slightly longer journey might suit her. Jan Hidd and Lady Meath rail fair races, but Miss Te Koura stopped quickly In the straight. Copycat was very slow away.

A Narrow Witt Running right up to the good form he displayed at Te Rapa earlier in the week, Paso ftobles scored narrowly in a fine finish in the Hot springs Handicap. Rulette attempted to win all the way, and was followed Into the straight by Sir Abb, Trllliarch, Lornacre, Prince Rangi, Paso Rdbles, and Alby. When they straightened Up Sir Abb momentarily appeared dangerous, but weakened and Paso Robles came through strongly to withstand determined challenges from Star Artist and Alby. who ran fine races. Rulette struggled On gamely to be a close fourth, and most of the others were close up. The each-way favourite, Vaiamito, failed to get a good position early, and was never dangerous, although he was running on at the end, Trllliarch- and Prince Rangi showed dash, but weakened in the last furlong. A Dead-neat Claiming a Bib apprentices' allowance, Silver River attempted to win the Champion Hack Handicap from end to end, and it was only in the last stride that the fast-finishing Dutch Girl got up to dead-heat with him. The finish was one of the most exciting of the day, and the third horse, Privy Seal, was only a nOse behind the dead-heaters. Privy Seal ran one of her best races, being prominent throughout, and disputing every yard in the straight. Dutch Girl's finishing effort Was good, and she has become very solid. It appeared as if she would have Won outright in another stride or two. Cometarium, Brown Lap, and Gay Streak shaped creditably, but Glen Abb ran below expectations. Ivy Wlllonyx moved up from the rear approaching the turn, but the effort was too great, and she tired. Suleiman Unlucky Benefited by his racing at Te Rapa, the three-year-old Royal Bachelor won the Waihou Handicap from end to end, although he had very little to spare. After jumping out very smartly from No. 1, the consistent Sueiman made a determined bid for victory, and was probably a shade unlucky not to win. He Is in jjreat heart at present. The honest Tray Bit ran another solid race. The each-way favourite, Courtcraft, was a good fourth, after being handy throughout. His effort with 131b over Weight-for-age was a sound one, and he may be all the better for the race. Bachelor King appeared a possibility just after entering the straight, but failed in the last furlong.

I Wanganui Cup Winner Brazen King's win in t>e Wanganui Cup was his first in open class. His last win was in the Bristol Heck Cup at the Wanganui winter meeting last June, when he narrowly beat Dictate. His only previous placing this season was a se'cond to Tiger Gain at Feilding in November, and he had been off the Scene since the New Year. A four-year-old bay, he is an Australian-bred son of Brazen (sire of Bronze Eagle) and the Roseworthy—Burlette mare Booralie, a sister to the Auckland Cup Winner Tahadees and a member of the same family as that to which Wakeful, Nightfall, Noctuiform, etc.. belong, so it is easy to understand whence Brazen King secures his good qualities. Brazeh King Carries the same colours as Grand Jury, winner of the Wanganui Cup two years ago, those of Mr D. Lourie, of Turakina Valley, who secured him at the Sydney Easter sales as a yearling for 110 guineas. He has only recently been trained by the former hurdle rider P. McHugh, who was enjoying his first success in the role.

On the Plough Wild Chase, Paper Slipper, and others from the Chokebore stable were let off with useful tasks.

Track Work at Rlccarton v ■.''•? Fast work at RitSeartoh on Saturday was confined mostly to horses with engagements at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club's meeting on Saturday. ■The No. 6 grass track was open, but most trainers preferred to use the plough. In Good Order Sovereign Lady ran the last mile of nine furlongs in lmin 44 2-ssec, the second half in 53sec. This mare has improved considerably since her win in the Midsummer Handicap, and is putting more heart into her work than ever previously. Useful Task* Royal Chief and Studley Royal were companions over six furlongs in lmin 18 l-ssec, the first thrfee in 38sec. 'They finished together and both finished with something in hand. Some Shamble, with Clubman as a mate for the last five furlongs, covered seven furlongs in lmin 34 2-ssec. Rabble easily accounted for Con-, tract over six furlongs in lmin 20sec, and Flashlight and Dividehd followed in lmin 19 ,2-sseC. Happy Night also took lmin 20sec, and his stable mate, Nightcalm, was kept in restraint by his trainer-rider to record lmin 23sec. i A Smart Effort The best over this distance was cre<? ited to Dictate, who finished better than Dracula in lmih 17 l-ssec, the first three in 37 2-ssec. Nolana ran five furlongs well in lmin 2 3-ssec, the first two in 24 2-ssec, and Love Affair and Lady Leigh each took lmin ssec. A Recent Sale The RicCartoti owner-trainer J. H. Prosser has disposed of his three-year-bid gelding Recall, by Robespierre from Call Girl, to a patron of T. E. Pankhurst's stable at Invercargill.

Jumpers Progressing Nocturnus and Jolly Beggar are two regular workers at Riccarton, and both are very forward for this stage of the year. The former is to be given his first race since last August at Motukarara on Saturday. Indisposed Mr G. Murray- Aynsley has been confined to his room since he attended the midsummer meeting at Riccatton, ahd although he will have Sovereign Lady racing at Motukarara he is not likely to attend the fixture. A Brief Visit Mr E. W. Spencer, formerly president of the Reefton Jockey Club for many ybars, returned to New Zealand last Week from England, and is at present on a Visit to Christchurch. He left Reefton some two years ago to settle in West Africa, but a few months back, owing to illness, had to go to Ehgland for treatment. It is Mr Spencer's intention to return to England before the New Zealand winter. He will attend the Banks Peninsula meeting on Saturday in order to see his gelding Rabble J*ace. Mr Spencer bred Rabble, but has not yet seen him in action. He will again leave Rabble with C. McCarthy to race him during his absence. Jael, dam of Rabble, is at present in Westport, and is in foal to Lord Warden. Mr Spencer has had ill luck With Jael's two productions following Rabble, one by NightmarCh and the other by Lord Warden. Both met with injuries as yearlings and had to be destroyed. A Wise Procedure An innovation at Wanganui on ■Thursday that was helpful to the starter was the mode of. operating the balloon signal, states the Wellington "Post" When the totalisator closed the balloon was hoisted, and when the clearance sign was ready the bal* loon Was lowered only halfway, instead bi wholly. The starter therefore always knew Without doubt when the fields could be dispatched. The practice with most clubs is first to hoist the balloon, or other signal, and then lower it when the totalisator is cleared. If the light is bad, as When the balloon is between the starting-post and the sun, the starter sometimes misses the hoist, and then there is a long wait till information is boriie to the starter that- all is clear. The Wanganui procedure,.might well be adopted by other clubs.

TROTTING NOTES

Reminders Nominations for the Cheviot Trottins Club's annual meeting will close at 9 p.m. on Thursday. Acceptances for the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting will close today at 8 p.m. , Acceptances for two trotting events at the Banks Peninsula meeting will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. A Good Record M. B. Edwards, the Yaldhurst trainer, established something of a record on Saturday. At the Wairarapa meeting he produced three horses in Princess Beverley, Zincali, and Philario, and he drove them to win four races. He also rode Bayard to win the mile saddle race, a record of five wins out of eight races. At the Westland Racing Club's meeting the principal event was won by Wino, who is also trained by Edwards. The stakes were not big, and the dividends at Wairarapa were also limited, but possibly the good dividend paid by Wino would be sufficient recompense. The record is one of which Edwards might well be proud. An Improving Pacer Zincali, winner of the principal event at Wairarapa on Saturday, is a big, angular gelding by Jack Potts from Zara and has always given the impression that he will be well served by time. He has" been racing consistently during the last few months and has improved with' each race. He. may nc' have beaten anything of outstanding merit at Wairarapa, but he won in very good time, and this may be only the forerunner of several victories. He is owned by the Greymouth sportsman, Mr J. Steel, well known a-few years ago as one of New Zealand's best Rugby players. ..Mr Steel also owns a two-year-old sister to Zincali, and already the youngster shows considerable promise. Philario in Form Philario redeemed the promise he had shown at New Brighton recently by his victory in the Greytown Handicap at the Wairarapa meeting, and he forms one of the. strong team of young horses -controlled by M. B. Edwards. Philario is owned by the Hon. G. R. Hunter. M.L.C., who. m partnership with the Hon. P. C. Webb also races the galloper,,Wino.. No Action Taken After the County Stakes had been decided at the Westland meeting on Saturday the stipendiary steward, Mr J. S. Shaw, lodged a protest against third money being awarded to Brian Boru, who had galloped past the post. The stewards decided to take no action.

An Attractive Trotter Princess Beverley, one of the most attractive young trotters in" commission, won two races at Wairarapam approved style and is apparently due for further successes. She is a five-year-old mare by Native King from Beverley Audubon, and her only previous start was at "the Ashburton meeting on Boxing Day, when she made a brave fight against a really good trotter in Peggotty ; Biworthy, who finished second to Princess Beverley each time, has been placed in his last five starts, and in the North Island he is regarded as one of the most promising young trotters seen inaction for some time. He has breeding behind him, for he is by Worthy Bingen (by Nelson Bingen— Bell) from Worthy Chimes, who, by Worthy Bond—Queen Chimes, is a half-sister to the New Zealand record-holder, Worthy Queen. Bing Crosby With the idea of settling him down Bing Crosby is to have a course of training at Addington, and he is now in J. Siebel's stable. Bing Crosby is a very fast pacer, and possibly the experience of working with a big number of horses will help him to overcome the nervousness he has shown on occasions. A Three-year-old . F G. Holmes has in hand a promising three-year-old filly by Frank Worthy from Moonlit, who ■ has already left a more than useful pacer in Morello. In the same stable Graham Direct is being given light work. His next race will probably be m the Inter-State Handicap at Ashburton on April 9 after which his mission will be the inter-Dominion Championships.

Two Victories In addition to Wino winning at Hokitika last week for the Hon. G. R. Hunter and the Hon. P. C. Webb, the same owners had a success at Wanganui with their three-year-old gelding Shangri-La, by Gascony from Haetangl. who won the maiden event on the first day with L J. Ellis in the saddle. This was the first win of Shangri-La, who is trained at New Plymouth by H. Gray. Lochiel's Year The first Newmarket Handicap success at Flemington by a purely New Zealand visitor was achieved in 1887 by Mr G. G. Stead's five-year-old Prince Charlie hc--o Lochiel, who ip the following spring added the New Zea"and Cup to his excellent record. Lochiel was the favourite in a field of 24.
