RACING AND TROTTING

WESTLAND E.G.

HANDICAP WON BY WINO ITHE PRESS Special Service.] GREYMOUTH, February 26. The Westland Racing Club's summer meeting opened at the Hokitika Racecourse to-day in fine but overcast weather, before a fair attendance. The track was yielding, but provided exceptionally good going, considering the recent heavy rains. The fields were generally small, but provided interesting racing with several close finishes. The meeting was exceedingly well conducted, reflecting greatly to the credit of the club officers, headed by the president, Mr J. J. Mcintosh, and the secretary, Mr D. J. Evans. The outstanding features of the day's racing were Financiere's good victory in the Novice Stakes and Storm Signal's double victory in the trotting events. Silver Ring was reproduced after an absence of almost 12 months from a race meeting, and he ran prominently in the Williams Memorial Handicap, in spite of his impost of 11-4. Silver Ring pulled up sound and will have his next racing at Motukarara, before going on to the Wellington meeting. The principal event, the Williams Memorial Handicap, was won impressively by the Canterbury-owned and trained, Wino, wlio led throughout. Canterbury representatives scooped the pool at the meeting and the Riccarton horsemen, H. Hibberd, with two winning rides, and A. E. Ellis. A. Messervy. A. Russell, and M. Caddy, with one win each, were the successful horsemen. The totalisator handled £4419 for eight races, as against £4348 for seven races on the second day of the 1936 Christmas fixture. Hibberd an armchair ride in the Novice Stakes. Jumping out smartly. Financiere soon established a lead of six or eight lengths on her nearest attendants, Metric, Gold Coat, and Lisnacree, and won in a canter from Metric, with Gold Coat, who fared poorly in the dispatch, a fair third. Culverden was finishing on in fourth place, with Lisnacree next. Necessary was tailed off throughout. Windward Wins Windward won the Stafford Hack Handicap easily from the pacemakers, Gilford and Gayspear. Gayspear was the first to show out from Amount. Windward, and Gilford. After two furlongs, Gilford raced to the front and led into the straight from Windward, Gayspear, and Amount, with Potent showing up on the outside. Windward had Gilford's measure inside the distance, beating him comfortably. Gayspear, Potent, and Amount were almost in line next. Potent, the favourite, lost ground at the start. Amount had every chance, but failed to go on with it at the right end. All the Way Storm Signal was the leader throughout in the Borough Trot, and won with something in hand. Rey Pointer failed to leave the mark, whilst Orby Lad, Colonel Wrack, and Wicklow Lady broke up early in the contest. Storm Signal took up the running from Temeraire, Wicklow Lady, Amywyn, Free Author, Orby Lad, and Red Glow. At the home turn Storm Signal, Temeraire, and Amywyn were well clear of the remainder. Storm Signal finished best to win by two lengths from Temeraire, with Amywyn a length further back third. Then came Free Author, Colonel Wrack, t and Kate Bingen. Wino's Surprise Outsider in an evenly backed field of four runners Wino was the leader throughout in the Williams Memorial. Silver Ring made his appearance after an absence of nearly 12 months. He raced well behind the leader, Wino, for the first seven furlongs, and then drifted to the rear. In the straight, he showed some of his old brilliance, and was right up with the leaders to the distance, but pulled up quickly, and finished last. He, however, appeared quite sound, although . a little dis-! tressed at the finish. Waitaka set out after the leader over the last three furlongs, but failed to overhaul him, Wino beating him by a length, with Swordstick three lengths back. Then there was a gap of two lengths to Silver Ring. Sprinters Outclassed Jumping out smartest from the inside position, Delium, with his light impost, outclassed the sprinters in the Summer Handicap. The favourite, Wine Card, Metal Bird, and Silver Lark on the outside, fared badly in the dispatch, whilst Invoice suffered a setback before a furlong was covered. Delium carried on clear ot Arrowrose, Rebel Star; Invoice, Copyist, and Acceptable. Delium was clear into the straight from Arrowrose, Rebel Star, Acceptable, Wine Card, and Metal Bird, and won with ease from Acceptable, who finished fast on the rails to beat Arrowrose by a length. Rebel Star was close up fourth, v/ith Metal Bird and Wine Card also handy. An Overdue Win Elmarch scored an overdue win in the Goldsborough Hack Handicap, in which he secured a lucky run on the rails when the field swung wide at the home turn. Emmeline Girl and Potent disputed the early leadership from Windward and Elmarch, with Gas Mask and Maroha tailing-off. Emmeline Girl was just clear of Potent, Windward, and Elmarch into the

straight. Elmarch came through on the rails and had the measure of the field at the distance, drawing out to win comfortably from the outsider. Emmeline Girl, with Potent a close third. Windward was fourth. Gas Mask next., and Maroha last. Dual Success

Storm Signal, the favourite, who was not penalised, completed . double when she scored a narrow victory over Tagua in the County Handicap Trot. Storm Signal was always disputing the load with Temeraire, their nearest attendants being Tngua?Brian Boru, and Lady Ann. Storm Signal and Tai-ua drew past Temeraire a 0 yards from the post, Storm Signal prevailing by half a length from Tagua, with Erian Boru a length away. Temeraire, who was unlucky to miss the judge's eye for third place, was placed fourth. Then came Lady Ann, Superb, and Tarn. Last to First Golden Dart was responsible for an impressive performance in winning the Railway High-weight Handicap from the tail of the field. Huulbowline took on the role of pacemaker, and disputed the lead with Malvasia, from OwUgleam, Gold Boy, and Golden Dart. Th'J last-named moved up fast across the top, and was within striking distance at the straight. Owlsglcam and Golden Dart finished fast from inside the distance, both overhauling Haulbowlinc. In a stirring finish, Golden Dart won by a neck from Owlsgleam, with Haulbowlme half a length away. Gold Boy was a moderate fourth. NOTES ON THE RACING [THE PRESS Special Service.l INVERCARGILL, February 26. All the Way Win Pink Del was in the van all the way in the Mataura High-weight, and paid a good price in view of her forward running on the first day. Pink Del was followed out by Last Post, Delrain. and Poniard. With half a mile to go Last Post and Pooiard joined Pink Del, but the last-named drew clear again across tne top and led into the straight from Last Post, Poniard, and The Surgeon. In the run home Pink Del stayed on to beat The Surgeon. Last Post was a good third, and Poniard close up fourth. The favourite, Poniard, had every chance. A Big Margin Mona's Song romped home in the Hokonul Hack Handicap. Combat and Spanish Lad got away badly, and Verdure took up the running from Mona's Song, Aspire, and Night Wings. Verdure was two lengths clear along the back, but Mona s Song ran past her at the end of four iurlongs, and inside the next furlong /Spanish Lad ran into second place in front of Combat and Night Wings. Once in the straight,* Mona's Song drew right away, and beat Spanish Lad by four lengths. Night Wings was a neck away third, and Volo Dale fourth. Mona s Song won very easily, but the race was marred by a bad start, which wrecked the chances of Spanish Lad and Combat. A Surprise I There was a surprise in the Telegraph Trot when the back-marker, All Kings, scored in. an exciting finish and paid over a third of a century on the win machine. Provincial made the early running from Dora Lindsay, Kentucky Sun, Gracious, and All Kings, who began very fast. There was little change in the order at the end of six furlongs, and going to the far turn All Kings improved his position in fourth place. - Provincial held command across the top, and led into the straight from Kentucky Sun, All Kings, and Dora Lindsay. It was a great race home, and All Kings got up on the outer to beat Provincial by half a head. Kentucky Sun was a head away, and Dora Lindsay close up fourth. Roy Bun Wins Consistency was rewarded - when Roy Bun took charge three furlongs from home in the President's Handicap and cleared right away in the straight. Pink Robe led out from Roy Bun and Grand Finale, and this was the order at the end of half a mile. Amelita, who was covering a lot of ground, moved up into third place along the back, and at the far turn Roy Bun ran past Pink Robe. Continuing his run, Roy Bun had a length's lead at the top of the straight from Pink Robe, and he came right away to beat Pink Robe by six lengths. Amelita was four lengths away third, and Beam a poor fourth. This was Roy Bun's fifth start in Southland for a first, three seconds, and a third. Easy Victory Astaire was a pronounced odds-on favourite for the Trial Handicap, and he led all the way to win very easily. Dolita and Astral Flash got away badly, and Astaire led out from Ardmayle and Lochie River. There was little change at the end of three furlongs, and Astaire was first into the straight from Lochie River, Ardmayle, and Astral Flash. Astaire drew away in the straight and beat Lochie River by three lengths. Astral Flash was, a length away and finishing strongly. Ardmayle was a moderate fourth. An Early Advantage Viking got a flying start in the Borough Handicap, and he eventually won easing up by five lengths. He got two lengths' break on the others at the start, and held it along the back from Rodeur, Irish Birdcatcher, and Western Song, who weie racing together a length in front of Volo Dale. Viking increased his lead going to the home turn, and ran right away in the straight. Western Song beat Irish Birdcatcher • for second money, and Volo Dale was a head away fourth. Jennings stole the race on Viking at the start. and the others did not have a chance with the winner. Rodeur shaped very disappointingly. Another Big Dividend Jesse Owens was always well placed in the Riversdale Trot, and won decisively to pay over a score on the win machine. Salalon, Princess Rey, Edith Grattan, and Dewey Cloud broke at the start, and Drumbunnif took charge from Lady Ita, Jesse Owens; Picotee, and Crown Peak. There Vas. little change at the end of half a mile, except that Crown. Peak moved into second place: With half a mile to go Dounbvuanif teas- still ia charge.

from Crown Peak, Lady Ita, Jesse Owens, and Capri, and Gold Streak moved up to the leaders as they raced across the top. Drumbunnif led Crown Peak and Jesse Owens into the straight, but broke her gear half-way down the running and went to a break. Jesse Owsns finished best and beat Capri by two lengths. Guywin was a length away third, *nd Lady Ita was close up fourth. Then came Gold Streak, Crown Peak, and King Dru.sus. Dual Success Sailing Lady was baeked as a certainty for the Autumn Handicap, but she got the worst of a snap start and finished out of the money. Pink Del repeated her earlier success by leading all the way. Pink Del was followed out by Coxcomb. Johnny, and Night Wings, and ««y raced in this order for five furlongs. Then Sailing Lady moved up fast into third place and the' field was bunched at the home turn In a good finish Pink Del held on to win by a head from Night Wings, who finished strongly on the rails comb was two lengths away third and Johnny next. WANGANUI J.C. STAKES WON BY ICING (nlll ABfOCIiTIOB TOLBaXAX.) WANGANUI, February 26. The Wanganui Jockey ' v Club's autumn meeting was concluded in fine, warm weather. There was a large attendance, and the totalisator handled £21,208. against £15,415 10s, making a total for the meeting of £37,609, against £27,432 10s, an increase of £10,177.
