— — MINISTER VISITS CLUB AT NEW BRIGHTON SCHEMES BRAISED BY MR SULLIVAN Members 6£ the New Brighton branch of the New Zealand Unemployed Workers’ Movement received a pleasant surprise when the Minister for Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) paid a visit to their new club rooms on Wednesday afternoon. The Minister was accompanied by the Mayor of New Brighton (Mr E. L. Smith).

Addressing the members, Mr van congratulated the executive on intiating such a progressive policy and for establishing a library and an unemployment bureau. He said it would be a good idea if all other branches followed on Similar lines. He also complimented the commit tee - on adopting a policy of tendering for contracts to be carried out on the co-operative system. This effort to Obtain work for the men would be greatly appreciated, and demonstrated to the public that they were desirous of obtaining work and becoming selfreliant, he said. . _ , . . The Minister also expressed ms appreciation of the arrangement that the club was to be used as a reporting station in Wet weather for rotational workers employed on long-distance jobs. This had been agreed to by the Labour Department, and would save the men from reporting on the job in wef weather. . The opening of an employment bureau for all Workers, without charges to workers or employers, also met with the Minister’s approval. In appredation of the interest rneinbers Were taking in the library and educational matters, Mr Sullivan made a grant to the library.
