An inquiry into the fall of Zilpah in the Kai Iwl Maiden Race was opened and adjourned till Saturday. The rider, H. J. Callahan, was admitted to hospital Buffering from a bruised groin. His condition is satisfactory. NOTES ON THE RACING (THE PRESS Special Service.] PALMERSTON NORTH, February 24. The outstanding event at the Wanganui autumn meeting, which opened to-day, was the Wanganui Cup, which was : won by Brazen King, who was almost the outsider of the field of 10. Brazen King, who has given Indications on several occasions of ability to stay, went right away in. the straight and won by three lengths. He is trained by F. McHugh and Is this trainer’s first winner. McHugh has only very recently been licensed. During the running of the Kai Iwl Malden Race, Zilpah lost her rider, H. Callahan, and later in the day a report was Issued that Callahan had been sent to hospital. A Surprise Win The meeting opened with a surprise. Artful Dodger beating the favourites tn the Westmere Hack Hurdles. Lifeguard made the early running, but he was losing ground at every hurdle, and with five furlongs to go. he had relinquished the lead. Roy&l Romance and Riotous then had charge, aqd crossing the top Riotous went to the front. Kentucky Song, Count Willonyx. and Artful Dodger were advancing and Royal Romance tiring. Count Willonyx looked very dangerous till Artful Dodger came through wijh an Irresistible run and went on to win by two and a half lengths from Count Willonyx, who beat Riotous by a length and a half. Royal Romance was fourth and Kentucky Song fifth. Artful Dodger, an aged gelding by Danilof from Oaklass, won well and la related through his dam to First Acre. A Favourite Backed to odds on. Surmount won the Juvenile Handicap decisively, though only by a neck. He led almost all the way and turned for home first clear of Footloose with Russian Ballet a couple of lengths behind, and Dark Eagle next. Footloose, under pressure, drew up to Surmount, but when a given a kick Surmount went away. Russian Ballet then finished solidly but she could not get to Surmount, who won nicely. Footloose was two and a half lengths away, and Filetto was fourth, just ahead of Dark Eagle. Drachma got away very badly. Always a Winner Shangri La, winner of the Kai Iwl Maiden Race, drew No. X at the barrier

and was in a leading position all the way. With two furlongs gone. Scarf Dance, Sigurd, and Zilpah were running abreast of Shangri La in the lead. Golden Pam moved up to the front and went on in the lead with Shangri La, and at the halfmile Gold Glare encountered trouble. With two furlongs to go, Shangri La and Golden Pam were well clear, and Shangri La appeared to have the race in hand. Sigurd and Gold Glare, however, staged good finishing runs, and Shangri La passed the post half a length ahead of Gold Glare with Sigurd a neck away. Scarf Dance was a fair fourth, and then came Some Brandy and Golden Pam. A Good Performance Conveyor's performance in winning the Victory Hack Handicap, which was for apprentice riders, was meritorious. Conveyor was sent back to last soon after the start, and was badly placed in the small but bunched field, nearing the straight. He pulled to the outside and came on to win very nicely by half a length from Ilias. who just beat Student Prince. Amatory was a good fourth, and the only other runner was Parry. Icing in Form Icing, patiently ridden, was too good for the Tayforth Hack Handicap field. Malibu made most of the running, and at the straight entrance Captain Treville, Bonny Glow, and Royal Choice were prominent. Icing came fast on the outside and won easily by a length from Bonny Glow, with Royal Choice four lengths away third, and Malibu fourth and Captain Treville and Lady Hoarirl almost in line with him. Icing hit out splendidly all the way and won most attractively. She is improving. Favourites Beaten Catalogue was sent out favourite for the Wanganui Cup. but did not get a smooth passage and was beaten out of a place. Race Boy and The Bigot were m front entering the back stretch, and were five lengths clear of Sergia with Francis Drake and Master Cyklon next. Catalogue made a fast move forward between the five and the four furlongs post, but had to remain well out from the rails. A little later Brazen King was moving up and Race Boy was receding quickly. Brazen King led into the straight with Francis Drake, The Buzzer, and Middle all under pressure throwing out ; challenges. The challenges were futile for Brazen King ran in a comfortable winner by three lengths from Lowenberg. who finished fast on the outside to beat Middle by a head for third. The Buzzer, Francis Drake, Sergia, and Master Cyklon followed. Brazen King definitely outstayed the field and, though some excuse can be made for certain runners, it is unlikely they would have beaten him on the day. Francis Drake proved a handful for his light rider, and ran about a lot. Catalogue wasf very unfortunate in the running, but Sergia had a good passage and was unequal to the task. Field Outclassed Laughing Lass outclassed the poor lot opposed to her in the Flying Handicap. She was in front before reaching the straight, and ran on for a very easy win from Notium and Race Call, with Debham and Aiwa! next. An improver The improving hack, Alloa, was too good for the others in the Petre Hack Handicap. Following Amoroso, Collodlan, and Gaily into the straight, he soon took charge and won decisively. Amoroso and Trebor filled the minor places. SECOND DAY’S ACCEPTANCES (rasas association nczoiuu.l WANGANUI, February 24. Noon—

Old Established Race The Wanganui Cup was first run in 1875, when the distance was two miles and a quarter. In 1866 the distance was reduced to two miles, and two years later it was further reduced to one mile and three-quarters. The sequence remained unbroken till 1930 when In the Shade was the last winner at one mile and three-quarters. Then after a break of four years the race was reinstated as a mile and a quarter event in 1935, a distance that still remains. While . the Wanganui Cup was in abeyance, the Earle Stakes, the usual second day’s feature, became the main first day’s event, with a race called the Wanganui Handicap, one mile and a quarter, figuring on the second day. Neither the Earle Stakes nor the Wanganui Handicap, however, was a true counterpart of..the former .Cup race.

Grand Finale is a halfbrother to Gold Boa and Valmarch. New Stewards The Australian Jockey Club has made important changes in the appointment of its stipendiary stewards. Mr Ij. G. TURF GOSSIP

Westland R.C. Our special reporter telegraphed as follows from Greymouth last evening; Although conditions were threatening in Westland to-day, fine weather is likely for to-morrow’s races at Hokitika. Following a lengthy dry spell, the track will be hard. A Small Field Roy Bun, who has raced consistently in the last few months, will be on hand at the Gore Racing Club’s meeting to-day. He has two engagements but as he will have only three opponents in the Summer Hack Handicap, one mile, he is likely to contest this event. In Veteran Stage Rebel Star, who figures in the acceptances for the Westland meeting, has been off the scene for a long time. He has had the distinction of undergoing two operations for respiratory trouble, and judging by the manner in which he galloped at Riccarton on Tuesday, he may still be capable of winning races. Rebel Star is now trained by his owner, Mr S. Shaw, father of Mr J. S. Shaw. At Hokitika Gold Coat, a stablemate of Rebel Chief will carry the colours of ownertrainer F. Hall, at Hokitika to-day. He is by Pink Coat and although little seen in public, he has displayed promising form in his recent track essays. He will be ridden on the trip by A. Russell, who will also have the mount on Golden Dart.

A Likely Proposition Manetho is now the property of Mr W. D. Westenra, who intends to hunt him. and if he carries on satisfactorily, to race him over fences later in the year. When given his initial schooling at Riccarton Manetho shaped very promisingly and after a season in the hunting field, he may make good. Manetho can claim some good breeding as he is by D>acquenod (sire of Diamond) from a close relation to Gaine Carrington. Peter Jackson, and Wotan. On the Improve The Robespierre mare Rodeur, who raced indifferently in Canterbury early in the season, and again on her return to Southland, appears to have struck form once more. Her Imin 13sec in the open sprint on the first day at Winton was one of the fastest run over six furlongs . ever seen on the course, and she ran Janet Gaynor to a nose in Imin 13 l-ssec on the second day.

TROTTING NOTES

Reminder A payment of £ 1 for the New Brighton Challenge Stakes, to be run in October, will close to-day at 5 p.m. A Poor Field As in the majority of good class races this season, the nominations received for the R. A. Armstrong Handicap, to be decided at the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting on March 5, are very disappointing, and it seems the time has come when clubs might well pay more attention to horses with slower records. In the big race at Wellington, only 10 horses have been entered, and with an unhoppled pacer. Nervie’s Last, on the back mark trainers have not given the support such a race deserves. Nervie’s Last is a great pacer, without straps, and 45 yards may not be too much of a handicap to give away. On Saturday last at New Brighton Blair Athol finished second to Renown’s Best, but it was a very poor second, and did not stamp the chestnut as a champion racehorse. Yet, while it is admitted that Blair Athol was a poor second to the winner, it must be remembered that he had the hardest row to hoe in his attempt to bridge the gap that always separated Renown’s Best from the rest of the field. None of the others made any impression. In the absence of Renown’s Best, Blair Athol must n->w be considered and he should be the early favourite. Frisco Lady on Saturday last was narrowly beaten by Gallant Knight for third place, and she may have been improved a good deal by the race. She is a mai*e of class, but possibly would be suited by a journey short of two miles. • Ashburton T.C. The Ashburton Trotting Club has issued an attractive programme for its meeting, to be held on April 0, and the big attraction will be the race for the Inter-State Handicap, of a mile and a half, which stipulates a limit of 84 yards. The stake is £7OO, the winner to receive £SOO, and on the same day the Futurity Stakes of £llOO, for three-year-olds, will decide the supremacy of horses of this age. No stake is worth less than £l3O for maidens, and another attraction will be provided in a race over two riiiles for 5.1 class horses. Nominations will close on March 24, at 8 p.m. Matinee Racing A good deal of interest was taken in the events for two-year-olds at the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association’s matinee meeting at New Brighton yesterday and some good young pacers were given valuable experience. Six started in the first heat. The Wrack—Trix Pointer colt, a brother to Wrackler, began smartly and led from Centaurus. The other four were slow away. Shadow Sun ran into second place at the half-mile, which was reached in Imin 16 2-ssec. He led into the straight from Shadow Sun,. Taiki, and Centaurus, and a fine race home saw Shadow Sun finish well to beat the Wrack colt by a head. Taiki was third two lengths further back, and Centaurus was fourth. Times, 2min 23 2-ssec, 2min 23 4-ssec, 2min 24sec. Slow Beginners Three started in the second heat, and all were slow to move when the barrier was released. The sister to Waitaki Power, by Travis Axworthy— Waitaki Girl, was soon in the lead and, pacing attractively, led all the way to win with ease by more than 100 yards. Wish well was second, with the Wrack —Entice filly third. The last-named is a half-sister to De Soto. The win-, ner paced her last half-mile in Imin 4sec, a good effort. Times, 2min 27sec, 2min 43sec, 2min 47sec. Nine started in the maiden pacers’ race. Kay Francis began smartly and led out from Chaise, Rerekohau, and Wee Potts. At the half mile the last-named ran up to Kay Francis, and these two led the field until half a mile from home, where Wee Potts took charge. Finella- improved her position round the home turn, and a good race down the straight saw Finella beat Wee Potts by a head, with Kay Francis a head away third. Times, 3min 35 l-ssec, 3min 35 2-ssec, 3mih 35 3-ssec. A Good Race

The Iwo-mile, 4min 46sec class, handicap at New Brighton yesterday was an excellent race. Hidden Charm began quickly to lead Twenty Grand and Eastern Prince. Aristotle broke up at the start and lost nearly 100 yards. No change took place until nearly half a mile from home, where Twenty Grand ran to the lead. Aristotle had

made up leeway and with three furlongs to go was in a handy position. Twenty Grand led into the straight, and in a good finish just held off Hidden Charm with Eastern Prince and Aristotle close up. It was a great finish. The time was exceptionally fast, and the trotter, Aristotle, put up a good performance to finish so close up. Times, 4min 30 3-ssec, 4min 31 4-ssec, 4min 31sec. Seven started in the 3min 39sec class. Rhinegold began best, although he tangled and Streamline was soon alongside. These two made the pace for nearly a mile, when Jambo rushed to the front and led from Rhinegold. Streamline, and Karoro. In a good finish Karoro won by a head from Jambo, with Evora in third place. Times, 3min 28 2-ssec, 3min 27 4-ssec, 3min 30 l-ssec. Judgement began smartest to lead Syntax by 10 lengths at the end of a furlong in the unhoppled trotters’ race, with Bingen Axworthy in third place. Thor ran into third place at the end of half a mile and Judgement broke at the seven-furlong post. Thor

took the lead to go on and win easily by a length from Syntax with Judgement in third place. Co Director wM close up fourth. Times, 3min 35 2-Ssec, 3min 36 4-ssec, 3min 37sec.

Safer Fences Wanted | The type of hurdle in use at Ellers- , lie and Avondale was discussed at some f length at a special meeting of hurdle riders called by the New .Zealand Jockeys’ Association and held in Hamilton on Saturday evening, when the vice-president (L. Dulieu) presided. It - was the pnanimous opinion that, hav- j ing regard to the pace at which hurdle ' races were run and to other relevant features, the hurdles in use at these two courses constituted a very definite menace not only to the horses, but also to those who had to do the riding. It was decided to approach the Auckand branch of the Ownersv Trainers’ and Breeders’ Association and seek their co-operation in an effort to have safer fences provided at Ellerslie and Avondale.

The Westland Racing Club’s meeting, opening at Hokitika to-day, should be successful in every way. All fields are reasonably well, and some good horses are engaged, these including Silver Ring, who will be having his first race for well over 12 months. He will be ridden by A. E.
