THE STOCK EXCHANGES

METALS AGAIN ACTIVE HEAVY TURNOVER OF WOOLWORTHS There was a heavy turnover of metals shares on the Christchurch Stock Exchange yesterday, when business generally was brighter and prices higher. The dividend and bonus announced by Woolworths stimulated brisk trading for the shares, 3900 of which changed hands at advancing prices.

UNLISTED STOCKS Sales on ’Change 200 BalVns Breweries (Iss paid) (2) 012 3 Banking Bank of New Zealand wore firm, with buyers and business at 435, Buvors of National Bank of Australasia raised their bids to £l4 12s 6d. without attracting sellers. New Zealand Guarantee Corporations were weaker, at 4s 4d, closing quotations Id on either side. Buyers of P. and O. Deferred Stock raised their bids to 295, but sellers were reticent. Westoort-Stockton Coal, preference, were fractionally weaker at 6s, but closed with buyers at 6s Id. sellers at 6s 4d. Sellers of Christchurch Gas reduced their limits to 295. New Zealand Breweries were a shade easier* at 45s Bd, closing quotations Id on either side. Miscellaneous Berlei (N.Z.) changed hands at 67s 6d. British Tobacco were stronger, with buyers and dealings at 49s 3d. Broken Hill Proprietary advanced to dealings at prices ranging from 62s 4d to 62s 7d, sellers staying in at the highest price, buyers at 62s 6d— the contributing were fractionally firmer, with business at 335, and further buyers at 33s 2d. Electrolytic Zinc were firmer gt 47s 6d to 47s lid. market closing 47s 6d buyers, 47s 7d sellers; the preference rose to 50s. but later dropped to 49s 2d, and there were further sellers at the lower price. G. J. Coles rose sharply to 82s. 32s 6d, and 82s 3d, market closing 82s buyers, 82s 3d sellers. An odd parcel of Howard Smith changed hands at 20s Bd, and more were wanted at that price. Woolworths, Ltd., on an active market, fluctuated between 26s 9d and 28s 6d. market closing 26s 9d buyers, 26s lOd sellers. Woolworths, New Zealand, advanced to 21s 9d, market closing 3d either way. Mining Broken Hill South were firmer, with dealings at 35s and 34s 9d. and further sellers at the lower figure. Mount Lyells advanced to 31s Bd. 31s 9d, 31s 10d. and 31s lid, and more were offered at 31s Bd, buyers at 31s 7d. Mount Morgans advanced to 10s Id to 10s 4d, arid closed with sellers at 10s 2d, buyers at 10s Id. North Broken Hill jumped to 52s 9d and 535. but closed easier with sellers at 52s 4d, buyers at 52s Id. Rawang Tin were stronger, with dealings at 9s 7d and Ss 9d.
