The etching art developed in Central Europe, north of the Alps. It is a method of picture making on metal plates, in which the lines and depressions are eaten out by acid instead of being gauged or scratched mechanically. Lake Tsana in Abyssinia, the source of the Blue Nile, has just been sounded for the first time,'an Italian expedition having collected valuable information regarding its varying levels and geological structure, and plant, and animal life nearby.
