Two men employed by the Public Works Department at the Homer tunnel, Hollyford, have been admitted to the’ Southland Hospital suffering from facial injuries received during blasting outside the tunnel yesterday morning They were Edward Rask, a single man, aged 33. of 135 Spey street, Invercargill, and a married man, of Invercargill. Rask and his companion .were engaged at the foot of the hill outside the tunnel plugging a hole with gelignite in preparation for blasting rock. One of them was tamping the plug, when the gelignite suddenly exploded in the faces of the men and knocked them over. The assistance of others working nearby was available, and as soon as the injured men had been given first aid they were brought to the Southland Hospital in the camp ambulance. , No damage was caused to the tunnel and the injuries to the men, though painful, are superficial. A fortunate escape from serious injury was made by six occupants of a touring car, which fell more than 30ft from the road to the railway line at Dobson Bluff near Dobson, this evening. Shocking injuries were received by an old-aged pensioner, Watson Mitchell, at the Stillwater railway yards about 6 o’clock this evening, death ensuing in a few minutes. Mitchell, who was aged 80, resided in a hut across the railway yards at Stillwater, and he was taking a short cut across the. tracks when he was run over by a shunting engine. He was believed to be deaf and probably did not notice the engine approaching. Mitchell, who had no relatives, was probably the oldest West Coast coachdriver living in the district.
