TRAMPING ON THE HILLS
——♦ / NEW PATHWAYS BEING BUILT With the tar-sealing of the Summit road from the Sign of the Kiwi to Evans Pass trampers have feared that they are to be driven from their pathways on the hills or their safety endangered by the invasion of highpowered motor-cars. This was a likely prospect for some time, but Mr J. A. Thomson, supervisor at the Takahe, said yesterday that he had taken special precaution to see that trampers’ interests were cared for ps Mr Ell would have done. He had approached the former ActingMinister for Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb, when he held that office and obtained the employment of four men on rotational work building new pathways. The Hon. H. T. Armstrong, Minister for Labour, had also expressed himself in full sympathy with this plan. New tracks taking trampers into parts of the hills which many might never have explored. would be provided, Mr Thomson said, so that the Port Hills might not be stolen from the pedestrian by the motorist and ruined altogether as a pleasant ground for tramping excursions. He had personally approached the Minister because he felt that the existing tracks had been falling into disrepair. He was determined to see that the plans of Mr Ell for trampers were realised.
