RACING AND TROTTING

WESTLAND R.C. TO-MORROW’S programme The Westland Racing Club’s meeting will open at Hokitika to-morrow. The single-pool system will be in use. The following horses should race well:— Novice Stakes; Financiere, Lisnacree. Stafford Hack Handicap: Windward, Amount. Borough Trot: Temeraire, Storm Signal. Railway High-weight Handicap; Golden Dart, Owlsgleam. The programme is as follows:

WANGANUI J.C. PROGRAMME FOR TO-DAY [THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, February 23. To-morrow’s Wanganui Cup field is the best the Wanganui Club has had for years, and a great race is expected. Cuddle was withdrawn from the race at 4.45 p.m. to-day. The course should be In good order. Horses likely to be in favour are:— Hurdles: Royal Romance, Riotous, Kentucky Song. Juvenile Handicap: Surmount, Footloose. Russian Ballet. Kai Iwi Maiden; Sigurd, Fafner, Shangri La. . Victory Hack -Handicap: Conveyor, Silvanus, Student Prince. ' Tayforth' Hack' Handicap: Malibu, Icing, Bonny Glow. Wanganui Cup: The Buzzer, Sergia, Catalogue. Flying Handicap: Laughing Lass, Aiwa!, Airing. Petre Hack handicap: Gaily, Alloa, Trebor. The programme is as follows;

PROMISING JUVENILE A TE RAPA WINNER [By CARBINE.] . RoyevruS, winner (at double figures) of the two-year-old handicap on the second day at Te Rapa, is a chestnut colt by Surveyor from Desert Fire. Royevrus resembles his sire and may be one of the best of the line. He looks speedy and has a mice action. As he has not done much racing and is green, it was good play to have him ridden by an experienced jockey, L. J. Ellis, who rode him at 6Jlb overweight. Royevrus was troublesome at the barrier and was sent to the outside of the field. He lost several lengths at the start, but when the field had gone a furlong he was in front. He was a couple of lengths clear entering the straight and ran in a very comfortable winner. His was a good performance and stamps him as a very promising young horse.

TURF GOSSIP Answer to Correspondent “Anxious,” Linwood Sunnyland broke down badly in a hurdle race on the second day of the Geraldine meeting last September and is not likely to race again. Well-Bred Juvenile A yearling colt by Winning Hit from Dutch Money, bred and owned by Mr George Gould, has been taken in hand by F. Roberts, who also has the youngster’s half-brother Yale, owned by Mr D. Gould, in his stable.

Early Retirement Mercenary, owned by Mr H. D. Greenwood, has been retired to the stud. She had her only success at Oamaru at New Year, but disappointed in later efforts. By Paper Money from Egotism, Mercenary is only three years old and should do well at the stud. At Hokitika

Waitaka. who raced well on the West Coast holiday circuit, should race prominently at this week’s meeting at Hokitika. His second placing to Sovereign Lady in the Midsummer .Handicap at Riccarton early in the month was impressive, and as he was successful on the Hokitika course at Christmas he will no doubt be favourite for tomorrow’s big race. His most formidable opponent will no doubt be Swordstick, who ran second to Paper Slipper in the Craven Plate, while Wino was also a winner on the Coast last month. Another Year’s Spell Sky Pilot, who had to be turned out following a mishap in the Wellington Steeplechase last July, is to be left out for another year as he has not fully recovered from his trouble. At Te Aroha L. J. Ellis, who will be at Wanganui to-morrow, will not ride there on Satday, as he has made engagements at the Te Aroha meeting. One of Ellis’s mounts at Te Aroha will be King Rey in the Herries Memorial Cup. Ellis rode King Rey to victory in the Storey Memorial Handicap last Saturday. Heavily Taxed In referring to the taxation placed on racing, a Sydney writer said: “It is

doubtful if some realise that the burden is carried by a very small section. Attendances at Randwick on 20 or 21 days a year range from 25,000 to 60,000, but minor courses have an exceptional day if they are patronised to the extent of 12,000. It is therefore fair to assume that the big taxation revenue m the metropolitan area actually comes from less than 20,000 people. In every way racegoers are taxed, even to the cost of a cup of tea or a sandwich on a racecourse. If the rest of the community paid taxes in the same proportion as patrons of racing, the close of the financial year would invariably see the Government with a big surplus.” Death of Owner The death occurred on February 14, at a private hospital in Melbourne, of Mr Harry Nathan, who achieved some success as an owner. Mr Nathan, who was aged 55 years, was a native of Dunedin, and raced horses there at one time. After serving with the New Zealand forces in the war he went to Australia in 1919 and had a few horses in the stable of S. W. Reid, who, like himself, was a New Zealander. The best of them was the brilliant jumper Chrysostom, who won the Australian Jockey Club’s Steeplechase and several other races over fences at Randwick. Mr Nathan also raced Wrangle and Gunadorah. For Sydney The two-year-old Golden Flame, who was considered an Australian Jockey Club Gimcrack Stakes prospect in Sydney in the spring, but was unable to start, owing to meeting with an injury, has rejoined H. E; Russell’s active team. The sister to Golden Wings has done well during her spell, and if she trains on will be included in Russell’s team for Sydney in the autumn. Promising Stock The yearling filly by Foxbridge from Lady Marie, who was .purchased by Wright, Stephenson, and Company, Ltd., as agents, at the Trentham sales last month, is shortly to be shipped to her new home in Melbourne. On appearance the filly should come up to the best standard of the Lady Marie family, and may help to make a name for her young sire, whose stock are regarded as very promising. Flemlngton Double Advices from Australia show that a week ago Ajax was sole favourite for the V.R.C. Newmarket Handicap, a position in which his great Futurity Stakes victory would confirm him. Others quoted in the order named were Gold Rod and Mohican, Aurie’s Star and Regular Bachelor, El Golea, Ena, Lochlee, Pamelus, and Soltoi. Old Rowley was first choice for the Australian Cup, which is to- be run on March 5, but as he disappointed on

Saturday, Elariage may now have been elevated to that position. Other fancied horses quoted were Pooley Bridge, Egmont, Le Grand, and Marauder, Gay Knight. John Wilkes, and Pantoon. First Appearance An interesting recruit to the hurdling game at Wanganui will be the eight-year-old Davistock. who will be making his first appearance this term when he parades for the Westmere Hurdles to-day. Several of the sons of David, including Santa Casa. Musical

David, and Davanthus, have done well over fences in Victoria. Davistock last raced at the Wanganui Winter Meeting last June, when he unsuccessfully contested the mam flat events. Generally his form failed to rise to expectations last season, but on a trip to Nelson and Marlborough in the autumn he won the Nelson and Waterlea Cups. Belated Success

Sweet Memory, a Maniopoto mare bred in 1915, is only now coming really into the limelight as a brood mare, as Paladino and Nightcalm have shown excellent form lately. Sweet Memory, who had earlier produced a useful jumper and winner of the Grand National Hurdles in Membo, was 16 years of age when she foaled Paladino to Paladin, and 19 years when she produced Nightcalm, now a three-year-old, to Night Raid. A Useful Mare

Rona Bay's win in the Rotorua Cup brought her winnings up to £2727. The little mare has now captured 19 races in 80 starts, and as she never gets high in the weights she is liable to win again. Rona Bay was bought as a yearling from her breeder (Mr R. B. Hines) by Mrs C. B. Gill, Te Aroha, but it was not till this season that she carried Mrs Gill's colours. At first she was leased to J. W. Pankhurst, but before she began racing the lease was transferred to Mr O. Disley, of Wellington, a relative of the owner, and she was trained by W. H. Jones, mostly at Riccarton. Her first 15 wins were in Mr Disley’s jacket. The lease ran out last July, and the mare, returned to the Auckland district, has continued her winning ways in the north, with useful dividends still the result of her successes.

ATTEMPTING TREBLE SERGIA’S TASK TO-DAY [By Carbine.] At Wanganui to-day the Auckland mare Sergia will endeavour to equal the feat of another mare, Piuthair, who won the Egmont, Taranaki, and Wanganui Cups in the autumn of 1927. Already Sergia has won the Taranaki Cup and the Egmont Cup. She has a good field to beat to-day, but is a smart mare and her form entitles her to respect. When Piuthair won the treble for Mr R. A. McKenzie, who won races at the recent Taranaki and Egmont meetings with Clessamor, she carried 8-1 in the Egmont Cup, 8-7 in the Taranaki Cup, and 8-9 in the Wanganui Cup, and Sergia’s weight this afternoon is 8-5. Piuthair was ridden in her three successes by T. Green. Sergia’s jockey at New Plymouth and Haw era was R. Glading, her regular pilot, who is a son of her owner.

AUSTRALIAN RACING MEETING AT MENTONE (UNITED PBISS ASSOCIATION COPTEIOHT.) (Received February 23, 9.25 p.m.) MELBOURNE, February 23. The Newmarket Handicap candidate Silent Sentry created a surprise by winning from end to end the Newmarket Trial Stakes.at Mentone to-day, in which Hammerhead was unplaced. Namakia, trained by J. Fryer ■won the Berkshire Mile, giving the apprentice, W. Hooten, his first win here. Tooley Street is expected to make his Australian debut in the Welter Handicap, at Mornington, to-morrow.

TROTTING NOTES Reminders The first race at the matinee meeting at New Brighton to-day will be started at 2 p.m. A payment of £1 for the New Brighton Challenge Stakes, to be run in October, will close to-morrow at 5 for the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting to be held on March 12 have been extended to March 1 The programme for the handicap events is as follows:—Temuka ZHandicap, of £l2O, 3min 39sec class, one mile and a half. Seadown Handicap, of £135, 3min 34sec class, one mile and a half. Timaru Cup Handicap, of £SOO, 4min 30sec class, two miles. Kingsdown Handicap (unhoppled trotters), of £2OO. 3 min 56sec class, one mile and five furlongs. Wai-iti Handicap, of £135, 2min 56sec class, one mile and a quarter. Washdyke Handicap, of £220, 2min 46sec class, one mile and a quarter. The Kingsdown Handicap, 3min 56sec class, of one mile and five furlongs, is really a 3min 37sec mile and a half race, and so caters for a popular class. Betting will be under the single-pool system. Visitors The Australian Trotting “Record” says that Wrinkle and Major Speed, who will contest the inter-Dorainion championships at Addington in April, will leave Adelaide for New Zealand at the end of March. Many lightharness enthusiasts will make the trip, and the South Australian Trotting Club will be represented by Mr J. J. Rice. Walla Walla’s'Progeny The South Australian Trotting Derby, decided on February 12, was won by Royal Walla, and the Snowtown Derby by Radiant Walla, both three-yeai-olds being by Walla Walla.

New Zealand Bred New Zealand-bred horses had a big interest in the Derby meeting held at Wayville, Adelaide, on February 12. Bambina, by Wrack—Mambrino’s Last, won the third division of the Coorang Handicap, and Beau Desert, by Globe Derby—Belle Logan, and Marion Axworthy. by Travis Axworthy—Monica Galindo, ran a dead heat in the Para Handicap. In Tasmania Recent winners in Tasmania included Flying King, by Birdwod: Pendant, by Native King—Belle Logan: Scotswood. by Birdwood; Conde, by Concliff: and Jean Derby, by Globe Derby —Belle Logan. A Great Performance

In winning the Richmond Handicap at the Auckland meeting, Uenuku was responsible for one of the finest efforts produced by a three-year-old at Epsom, and his performance stamped him as a young pacer of exceptional speed. A break at the three furlongs post sent

him from first to nearly last, but wit a remarkable burst of speed he ra round the f.eld. to be in charge at th straight. He hung on with rare coui age and stamina, and scored a popu lar victory. Had he not left his fee in the run home in the Derby, Uenuki would have at least secured secoir place.. His dam, Bicolour, was a pie bald mare, imported from Australii and she won many races in harnes and saddle. Uenuku and Worth; Crest, the dam of Hill Crest, wer br.ed by Mr E. L. Breed at Wanganui. Inter-Dominion Championships The stakes for the inter-Dominior championship contests to be held a Addington on, April 16, 20, 21, and 2. have been increased to £12,700. Four teen horses are booked to leave Australia for Addington. The Perth champion, Lady Childewood, is due a* Addington in a few days, and sis horses from Melbourne will arrive bj the Maunganui early in April. They are Dan’s Son,< Kernel Lu, Picador Joy’s John, Wonga Pronto, and Oux Walla. Dan’s Son won the interDominion championship at Adelaide last year, and has done well in his engagements since then. In view ol the big entries received, the interDominion championship committee has decided to hold four heats on the first, second, and third days of the meeting, and the grand final on the fourth day. The stake for each heat will be £750, and the prize for the grand final will be £2250. There will also be two consolation races oh the concluding day of £450 each, and special prizes will be given for horses that do the fastest times in the various heats, and in the final. Lap prizes have been included in the stake for the grand final, together with a challenge cup. The sum of £250 and a ribbon will be given to the owners of the horses that gain the highest aggregate of points for the fastest net time in the championships.

Off to America Mr E. Tatlow, the well-known Tasmanian breeder, has decided to go for a trip to America, and while there will see all the Grand Circuit racing, says the “Australian Record.” Recently Mr Tatlow increased the size of the Derby Lodge Stud Farm by 125 acres, and in all probability some American importations will in the very near future enjoy Tasmanian pastures. A recent visitor to Mr Tatlow’s establishment was Mr W. Balloch, an early owner of Logan Derby. The Victorian duly admired Van Derby 2min 8 l-ssec, the very close relative of Lawn Derby, and also had th pleasure of witnessing a couple of trotting events on a Tasmanian galloping programme. Mr Tatlow visited New Zealand a few years ago and made several purchases, including Belle Logan, the dam of Logan Derby.
