LEGAL STATUS OF WOMEN

STUDY BY LEAGUE OF NATIONS PERSONNEL OF COMMITTEE OF EXPERTS (moil OUK OWN CORRESPONDENT.) LONDON, February 2. A committee of experts to study fhs legal status enjoyed by women in the various countries of the world as the result of the provisions of national law was set up by the Council of the League of Nations at a private meeting on January 27. The committee consists of seven persons—four women end three men—from Great Britain, the United States, France, Belgium. Jugoslavia, Sweden, and Hungary. The personnel was declared by the representatives of various women’s organisations to be net acceptable to them. A cable from the Australian and New Zealand Equal Rights International was received by Mr W. J. Jordan, the New Zealand delegate on the council. Mr Jordan also received deputations from the International Committee of the National Women s Party, the Women's Consultative Committee on Nationality, the National Association of Women Lawyers, the Open Door International, and others, which asked him to raise the matter before the council, and to request that the names of Dr. J. B. Scott (United States), Mme. Maria Verone (Paris?. Mrs Pethick■ Lawrence (London?, and Nour Hamada Bey tßeyrut) be considered. Mr Jordan raised the question accordingly. The Secretary-General, M. AvenoL thanked Mr Jordan for bringing the matter before the council.
