The Minister for Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) returned to Wellington last night. The Tourist and Trade Commissioner for New Zealand in Australia (Mr W. Taylor) gave a reception in Sydney yesterday to the Ministei for Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry) on the eve of the Minister’s return to New Zealand. Many prominent people were present.— United Press Association. The Hon. H. T. Armstrong (Minister for Labour and Employment) spent yesterday in the Ashburton district. He received deputations from the County Council and the Lyndhurst School Committee, and later inspected the headworks, diversion race, and mam race ot the Ashburton-Lyndhurst irrigation scheme. The Minister will be engaged on departmental business to-day, and he will probably return to Wellington to-morrow night. He was accompanied on yesterday’s tour by Mr H. E. Herring M.P., the Commissioner for Employment (Mr J. S. Hunter), and the District Public Works Engineer (Mr F. Langbem). Sir Alexander Roberts was a passenger from the north by the steamer express yesterday morning. Mr T. H. McCombs, M.P., returned to Christchurch from the north yesterday morning^ Mr A. Prentice, who has recently taken over the position of secretary to the North Canterbury Hospital Board, was welcomed by the chairman (Mr H. J. Otley) at yesterday morning’s meeting of the board. Sympathy with Mr P. Stanley Foster, who is in hospital, was expressed by the North Canterbury Hospital Board yesterday. Mr W. Machin, general manager of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association of Canterbury, Ltd., arrived from the north by the inter-island steamer yesterday morning. Mr J. H. Cunningham, general manager of the Wairarapa Farmers’ Co-operatiye Association, arrived from the north by the inter-island steamer yesterday morning. Dr. H. Christie was a passenger from the north on the inter-island steamer yesterday morning. Dr. F. W. R. Wright arrived from the north by the steamer express yesterday morning. Mr J. M. A. Ilott arrived by the interdsland steamer from the north yesterday morning. The' illness of Cr. F. J. Barlow, who is at present in the'Lewisham Hospital, was mentioned at the meeting of the Sumner Borough Council last evening. It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Cr. Barlow. Dr. and Mrs Rosenthal arrived in Christchurch last night by the express from Dunedin. Mr George Jackson, general manager. Ford Motor Company, New Zealand, arrived in Christchurch yesterday and entertained Ford dealers and their salesmen at dinner. Mr George Bruce Smith, general manager of the Australian Provincial Assurance Association, Ltd., is spending a few days in Christchurch before leaving for Sydney. Before the meeting of the Sumner Borough Council last evening, the Mayor (Mr T. Newburgh) mentioned the death of the Mayor of Timaru (Mr P. G. Vinneliy. Mr Newburgh said that it would be a sad blow to the people of Timaru to lose such an able and wellrespected Mayor, and he suggested that it would be fitting to write to the Timaru Borough Council and to Mr Vinnell’s relatives expressing the council’s deepest sympathy. Councillors stood in silence as a• mark of respect.
