NEW ZEALAND’S PROSPERITY

ro rat editor of tbe press Sir,—Could you spare a country reader spade to cafnmeht ori a report appearing in “The Press” on Tuesday, February 15. on a reception by the Christchurch BiisinesSfnen’s Club to the “Weintiaubs.” These gentlemen, and troups of. a similar .type, are the best means of ffee publicity to New Zealand; and according to thfe remarks Of Mr Hbrst Graff, Mr Fisher, and Mr F Wise, they were more than favourably impressed with What they had seeh since being in the Dominion. To quote Mr Graff, “I am happy to see such a gathering of prosperous and happy businessmen, and I am convinced that New Zealand is the most prosperous country in the world, with sO - much more freedom and so far away from European troubles. M. r Fisher added to this a eUlogy mf New Zealand hospitality, and gave forth his intention tp spread the light to everyone, including his friends, on his rettirn. The American member of the party expressed the sentiments of contentment amongst the people of Christchurch and expressed a wish to retire there. , NoW out of this peaceful and harmonious woodpile steps a nigger, none other than our esteemed young political student, Mr S. G. Holland M.P. Mr Holland, in replying to Mr Graff, said he was speaking shortly in Dunedin, and if after hearing his address he still thought New Zealand a free country, he would be very much surprised. By what act Of legerdemain or political hypnotism Mr Holland proposes to convince our visitors against sentiments expressed by them as eyewitnesses I cannot imagine, but .youth was ever optimistic. For the guidance o', our young f fiend, I should like to say that in dealing with visitors he should adopt the old motto, “My country right or wrong,” and not let political bias interfere with one’s patriotism. Trusting these few lines will assist Mt HOllahd, M.P., m getting back to the rartks of New Zealand “boosters.” —Yours, etc., A. CROMPTON. Rai Valley; February 18, 1938.
