BOROUGH AFFAIRS

MEETING OF RANGIORA COUNCIL IsEW CEMETERY PROPOSAL

Permission was granted to the Rangiora branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association to hold a street appeal on Tuesday, April 12, at the monthly meeting of the Rangiora Borough Council last evening. The Deputy-Mayor (Cr. F. E. Martyn) presided. Also present were Crs. H. R. Tavlor W. T. N. Keir, F. P. Ager, J. A. Ivory, and the Town Clerk (Mr J. M. Fraser). The following suggestions were received from the Returned Soldiers Association for Anzac Day:—(l) That the conduct of the services and parade be left in the hands of the association; (2) that the association pay for the cost of advertising; (3) that the Borough Council pay the cost of hymn sheets; (4) that Victoria Park be made available for the service, and in the event of inclement weather the Town Hall be made available free of charge. The suggestions were approved. The Department of Health wrote about the provision of a new cemetery for the borough consequent upon recent representations from the Catholic Church at Rangiora. As it was illegal at present for the establishing of a cemetery within a borough, the church cemetery could not be enlarged without contravening the provisions of the Cemeteries Act. It therefore became an urgent matter for the Borough Council to provide a public cemetery and to arrange to have a portion set aside for members of the Roman Catholic denomination. The matter was held over till the next meeting of the council. Commercial Lighting Rates The electrical engineer (Mr H. H. Matthews; submitted a report on the proposed revision of the commercial lighting rates. He recommended that the present system of charging should be changed in order to assist and encourage consumers to adopt afterclosing display lighting, the maximum demand system to be adopted, supplying a three-rate tariff for all purposes. The engineer estimated an annual saving of £l2O for the commercial consumers, based on the present rate of consumption. The matter was held in abeyance. The borough librarian (Mr E. Purchas) reported that the total number of books issued for the month was 3353, and readers totalled 1207.
