MEAT SUPPLY AT HOSPITAL

e QUESTION OF QUALITY DISCUSSED BOARD CONFIRMS ACCEPTANCE OF TENDER When the North Canterbury Hospital Board was asked at its meeting yesterday morning to confirm the acceptance by the finance committee of tenders for supplies for the coming financial year, the Hon. J. K. Archer, M.L.C., raised the question of the quality of meat and asked what arrangements had been made to insure that the supply would he satisfactory. The chairman (Mr H. J. Otley) said that the specification provided for the supply of wether mutton only. Mrs W. S. Bean said she took exception to the acceptance of a tender unless there was an undertaking that the quality of the meat would be better than in the past. The best was not too good for sick people, and in the past there had been complaints, some of which were “smothered." If the meat were cheap, it might not be the best. When the bread was very cheap, it was of poor quality, she said. The chairman: We are paying about £SOO more for meat this year. Mr L. B, Evans said there were complaints about the meat each year. When the finance committee accepted a tender, it insisted on the supply of wether mutton and first-class beef. There were competent officers at the hospital to see that the board received the good meat for which it paid. “Can we expect good meat when we accept a price which excludes the possibility of the supply of high quality meat?” asked Mr J. S. Barnett. Mr W. P. Spencer suggested tliat the board send its own buyer to tha Addington market. - After the matter had been further discussed in committee, the board confirmed the finance committee’s acceptance of the tenders.
