LAWN TENNIS

♦ A. K. QUIST TO PLAY IN CHRISTCHURCH MATCHES AT WILDING PARK ON SATURDAY

The visit to Christchurch to-morrow and on Saturday of A. K. Quist, Australian Davis Cup player, will give lawn tennis enthusiasts in the city the opportunity of seeing one of the leading amateur players of the world in action. The Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association has persuaded Quist, who is visiting New Zealand on business, to meet the leading Canterbury players in singles and doubles matches at Wilding Park on Saturday afternoon.

He will play C. Angas, Canterbury s No 1 player, in a singles match, which will be + he best of five sets, and later, with H. A. Barnett, he will meet Angas and H. Dymond in doubles.^ Quist is the present Australian doubles champion and last season was singles champion of the Commonwealth. In 1936 he was ranked fourth of the world’s best amateurs, but illness last year prevented him doing himself justice in matches overseas. His illness was a severe blow to Australia’s chances in the Davis Cup contest. Quist played in Christchurch in the 1934-35 season, when F. J. Perry, H. G. N. Lee, F. H. D. Wilde (England), and D. P. Turnbull (Australia) were seen at Wilding Park in triangular matches. Then a sound but not very spectacular player, the strongly-built little Australian impressed as one likely to go far in the game. His promise was justified in 1936. when he played brilliantly in the Davis Cup matches, beating H. W. Austin (England) and extending the German champion, G. von Cramm, in a brilliant five-set match. Quist has added to his sound ground strokes one of the most effective volleying and smashing equipments of the presentday game, and this makes him a potent force in doubles play. His style is one on which any young player might well mould his game, and one of his secrets of success is constant physical fitness.
