SMALL NUMBER OF FIRES
ASHBURTON VOLUNTEER BRIGADE OFFICERS ELECTED FOR THE YEAR Twelve calls to fires were received by the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade in the last year, stated the report presented by the foreman to the annual meeting held on Wednesday evening. Only one fire was in an occupied dwelling. The others were: Four to sheds, one to a theatre, and six to fences and rubbish. Roll calls during the year totalled 45, made up as follows: Alarms 12, meetings 12, practices 19. The approximate fire loss on buildings was £4150, on which the insurances totalled £9500, and on the contents, £3500. The average attendance at musters was 11 out of a total brigade membership of, 13. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £4l 4s Bd. The election of officers resulted:— Superintendent, Mr H. Hefford; de-puty-superintendent, Mr J. Hickey; lieutenant, Mr C. Solway; foreman, Mr J. Reeves; secretary-treasurer, Mr Solway; general committee, officers and last year's members, and Fireman J Leask; finance committee, officers and last year's members, and Fireman S Preddy; motormen, No. 1, Fireman C. Bax; No. 2, Fireman S. Johnson. TEMPERANCE WORK MEETING OF ASHBURTON UNION Miss Jackson presided over a fair attendance at the meeting of the Ashburton branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, held in the Baring Square Hall. Mrs Tulloch reported that the special effort sale realised £1 2s <3d, bringing the total funds to £lO 2s 6d. A collection taken up for the world's missionary fund amounted to lis. Miss Watson and Mrs Buchler were appointed delegates to the Dominion convention, to be held at Napier in March. A paper on the life and work of Frances Willard was read by Sister Mildred. Mr H. Hefford was elected superintendent of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade at the annual meeting > held on Wednesday evening, replacing ; Mr L. J. Kidd, who has resigned. A first offender for drunkenness was ► convicted and fined 5s at Ashburton yesterday morning before Mr W. H. Rundle, J.P.
