| CAR COLLIDES j WITH TRAIN j FOLK PERSONS INJURED AT 1 CITY CROSSING i i A collision between a goods train and a motor-car at the Colombo street crossing in the early hours of Saturday morning resulted in the four passengers in the motor-car being injured, two of them, mother and daughter, being admitted lo the Christchureh Public Hospital. The car was wrecked. Those injured were:— Mrs F. M. Aitken, head injuries and lacerated right knee; admitted to hospital

Mr Stephenson and Miss Stephenson were treated as out-patients and were able to go to their homes. All four injured resided at 150 King street, Sydenham. The moLor-ear was travelling north along Colombo street, and the train, a special goods from Ashburton, was coming into the Christchureh station. The train had waited at the Durham street crossing for a clear run in, and was travelling very slowly, at a speed estimated at about five miles an hour. No crossing keeper is on duty at the time, but tiiere arc warning devices. A doctor, the St. John ambulance, and the police were called immediately, and the four injured were takon to hospital after their wounds had been treated by Dr. J. C. Pairman.

Two men were severely injured when the motor-truck in which they were travelling left the Great South road bevond Papakura, ran down a bank and over-turned early *>n Saturday afternoon. Both men were taken to the Auckland Hospital. The injured are Reginald Cosscy, aged 25, .single, a farmhand, of Drury, who suffered a fracture of the spine, and Roger Bcde Dunn, aged 30, married, a farmer of Papakura. who had one hip-joint broken. The accident occurred on a straight level section of concrete highway. The truck, driven by Dunn, was travelling southward and it was stated that the driver swerved to avoid a collision turning across to the right-hand side of the concrete. The truck left the roaa and travelled some distance along the grass verge before capsizing. It came to rest with its wheels in the air and the cab smashed to pieces.

Cocks, the motor-cyclist, was taken in a St. John ambulance to the Christchurch Public Hospital, where his condition last evening was reported to be satisfactory. YACHTSMAN DROWNED NEAR OPUA MILLET BOAT CAPSIZES AUCKLAND, January 23. A yachtsman lost his life near Opua this afternoon when the 22-foot mullet boat Doreen capsized and sank off Gillefs Point, dragging its dinghy down after it. The victim was Mcrvyn Dickinson, aged 24, of Opua. He was employed in an Opua store. BOY DROWNED IN THREE FEET OF WATER TRAGEDY AT AUCKLAND BAY AUCKLAND, January 23. Drowned in three feet of water, a six-year-old boy lost his life at Blockhouse Bay at a time when there were many bathers in the water, this afternoon The victim was Donald Ambrose, a son of Mr Gustave Ambrose, of Eden terrace. The boy was found floating face down about 50 yards from the shore. The tide was full at 3 o'clock, but although it was failing when the boy was in the watev, there was very little current. Mr and Mrs Ambrose were on the shore at the time, and there were several bathers in the bay. The boy was seen about five minutes before he was found, but as far as is known nobody saw him get into difficulties. FRACTURED THIGH ITHE ritESS Special Service] GREYMOUTH, January 23.

A Greymouth girl, Carmell Callan. sged ¥l, was admitted to the Grey Hospital with a fractured thigh, received when she was knocked off her bicycle yesterday in Tainui street by a motorist, R. J. McGurk. She was coining out of a side street, and struck the right front mudguard of the car, which pulled up immediately. Her condition this evening is reported to be satisfactory.
