EARTHQUAKE AT HAWAII

CROWDS STAMPEDE FROM THEATRE SHOCKS DAMAGE RECORDING INSTRUMENTS (Received January 24, 1.15 a.m.) HONOLULU, January 23. A strong earthquake of two minutes' duration was felt extensively at Waikiki. Crowds stampeded from the Waikiki Theatre, which rocked violently, as did stores and buildings down town. The earthquake gradually increased in intensity. Telephone communication was partially disrupted. No serious damage has been reported so far.

It is stated that there were three sharp shocks, accompanied by a blinding flash in the sky, which was visible for 20 miles. The island of Kauai reported two shocks occurring almost simultaneously. The earthquake was most severe in the Hilo district. An official in charge of the University of Hawaii seismographs reported that all the instruments were shattered. It is reported from the island of Maui that stores were damaged.
