BOWLS TOURNEY ENDED

ROSLYN PAIR WINS TITLE ELMWOOD SKIP EASILY BEATEN WILSON'S STRONG CHALLENGE IN QI'ARTER-FINAL (j'BESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM ) DUNEDIN, January 23. The Dominion bowling championships ended on Saturday, when the pairs championship was decided. The weather was dull but fine and the Caledonian green played particularly well, rain the night before having robbed it of much of its fire. The championship was won by R. B. Clarke and C. E. Tyrrell (Roslyn), who played good bowls in beating H. Wilson and J. Sneddon (Linwood) by IS to 18 in riie quarter-finals, P. Delargey and P. Munn (Canterbury) by 17 to In? in the semi-finals, and J. R. Smith and H. B. Oakey (Elmwood) by the wide margin of 28 to nine on the nineteenth green in the final.

Tyrrell played many magnificent saving shots during the day, and demonstrated fighting qualities several times when he was faced with a considerable deficit. The game with Wilson in the quarter-final was exceedingly close, the pairs being 17-all at Ihe nineteenth head, but Tyrrell secured a brace at the twentieth against Wilson's single in the final head, and won by one point. In the earlier part of the semi-final with Munn. the game went against Tyrrell, who had three to his opponent's 12 at the tenth head. Thereafter, however, Tyrrell, given better openings by the lead, accumulated points rapidly and at the nineteenth head was on even terms with Munn. the scores standing at 15-all. A single to Munn on the twentieth and two to Tyrrell on the. final head gave the latter the decision.

The final was unexpectedly onesided, Oakey and Smith being unable to counter the accurate play of Tyrrell and Clarke. At the end cf the eighteenth head, Tyrrell was. leading by 22 to 9, and in a spectacular final head, in which, after a succession of drives by the Elmwood pair, the only bowls left on the green belonged to the Roslyn players, Tyrrell .won the game by 28 to 9. A play-off for third place between H. Belcher and E. Longworlh (St. Kilda) and Delargey and Munn resulted in a win for the latter by 17 to 15. Results:—

A SUCCESSFUL MEETING

GRIM STRUGGLE IN THE QUARTERFINAL

ELMWOOD PAIR DISAPPOINTS

[THE PRESS Special Service] DUNEDIN, January 23. The iinal stages of the pairs championship yesterday closed oic of the most successful tournaments ever held by the New Zealand Bowling Council. The weather throughout gave the Dunedin bowlers something of which to boast with justification, and tho fact that three titles were won by the representatives of three different districts was an additional lactor toward the general success. The visiting players spoke favourably of the Dunedin greens, and the excellence of the conditions was reflected in much bowling up to the best championship class in the concluding round of each championship. As in the rinks on Friday, the quar-ter-finals and semi-final of the pairs produced the most interesting matches, but the final was disappointing in scoring, although it provided a brilliant display by the winning pair, 11. B. Clarke and C. E. Tyrrell, of Roslyn. Christchurch had three pairs well in the running for the title, and perhaps the poor fight made by J. Smith and H. B. Oakey (Elmwood) in the final was because they Viad not had a grime since Thursday, when they played n semi-final and won by bowls that gave

the gallery cause for enthusiasm. P. Delargey and P. Munn (Canterbury) made a great bid to have an allChr'istchurch final. They beat A. Honcyman and A. J. Walker (Otago) in the quarter-final, because Delargey was able to overshadow the Otago lead and Munn played confident winning bowls. His up shots were beautifully played on the green, which wns not thoroughly suitable to them, and his command of the game was not seriously threatened, although there was only three points' difference m the final score. Wilson Beaten Tyrrell wont into the semi-final by beating H. Wilson, the Linwood *;kip, who had won the rinks the previous day. S. Sneddon was Wilson's lead, and he. like his skip, had played great bowls in the rinks, but both fell away noticeably in play as a pair. Tyrrell played a masterly game, adopting forceful tactics when his L.-ad lost form for a good part of the game. Wilson made a fight of it, but the green was heavier than it was on Friday, and his judgment was not. so remarkably sound. Tyrrell's lead found touch again over the last few heads, and together they were able to keep Wilson's score on the last liead to a

single, instead of two, which would have brought the scores levet. The semi-final between Tyrrell and Munn was a highlight of the day. It. was a grand game, and produced a thrilling finish. Tyrrell was slow lo Set started, Clarke again being erratic and allowing Munn's steadiness to pile up a lead oi 12 to 3 over the first 10 heads.

Tho Roslyn load regained form two or three heads later and tho pair began a grim struggle to make up Ihe leeway. Munn's experience made this a truly uphill battle, but Tyrrell played inspired bowls and on several fairly wide heads ho drew shot bowls that never looked like missing. His recovery to 1f)-all on the nineteenth end was brilliant, his score including two. two. one. two. and three.', while Munn got only one single. The twentieth head was a poor one, but it gave Munn a one-point lead again. On the last end Clarke drew a shot with his third bowl and Tyrrell rested Canterbury's second shot bowl out. Magnificent Finish

Munn was strong with his first bowl and -short with his second, and Tyrrell's second bowl, a beautiful draw, gave him four counters. Munn was equal to the occasion, and put his last bowl three inches from the jack, but Tyrrell finished the game magnificently. He played a beautiful draw with a yard on, took Munn's shot bowl out, and trailed kitty to get two. and win.

The crowd was thrilled and settled down in expectation of a grand final, .since Smith and Oakey had won the semi-final like champions. It was disappointed, however, the Roslyn pair maintaining their brilliance, but the Elmwood players were unable to find touch. On five ends Tyrrell scored threes, on two others he got twos, and the match ended when he scored six on the nineteenth. The Elmwood lead drove with his third bowl on this head, and put all his own bowls into the ditch. Tyrrell drew only fairly well with his three bowls, but Oakey drove three times and missed each time, thus leaving only six Roslyn bowls on the head. Munn had put up a great performance by being in the winning rink and the pairs finalist and he topped it by bcedms H. Belchcv and E. Longworth (St. Kilda) in the play-off for third prize in the pairs.
