ATHLETICS

NO FAST TIMES RECORDED

RACES ON WET TRACKS INTi;K.(I.I 15 COMPETITIONS CONTINUE!) Although many ° f the leading Canterbury athletes were not present, and conditions were by no means ideal for athletic:-, there were large entries in many ol the events and competition was as keen as usual at the first meeting of the second scries ol' inter-club athletic meetings held at Ensor's read on Saturday afternoon. Five clubs competed in both the senior sections of the competition, and in Section 1, Technical club scored 147 points—the most scored by a club in the competitions for many years. Early in the afternoon it rained quite steadily, and with the tracks in a sodden condition last times could not be expected. Field events were held in most sections, but no outstanding distances were recorded.

The Technical Club gained an easy lead in points in Section 1 and in the D grade section, and Presbyterian had a lead of more than 50 points in Section 2. Points were as follows:—■

MEMBERS IN WELLINGTON (r«.ISS iBBOCIATIOS T*LIG*AM.I WELLINGTON, January 22. The Trinidad representatives, for the Empire Games, the first team ever to leave Trinidad to participate in athletic competitions outside their own bounds, arrived here by the Remuera. The Remuera was originally to have left Trinidad on December 10, but the date was changed to December 24, and members of the team feel that the loss of time will have an unfortunate effect on their performances, as they will have little chance to practise and be brought up to concert pitch. They will leave for Sydney on Monday. The team consists of Lance-Corporal J. Ashmead, long and high jumper; J. C. Cumberbatch, West Indies' most brilliant sprinter; and Noel Stanford, middle-distance runner. The manager is Mr M. E. L. Joseph, secretary of the Trinidad Amateur Athletic Association. I VISITORS COMPETE AT MASTERTON

HIGH JUMPER CLEARS SIX FEET (FXI3B iSSOCUTIOK TKJSORAM.) MASTERTON, January 23. Considerable interest was attached to the appearance of members of the Trinidad Empire Games team at the Masterton amateur athletic sports meeting to-day. Noel Stanford, off the 10 yards mark, won the 440 yards in 50 l-ssec, after a great tussle with the local runner, J. Eastwood (syds). the

two competitors almost breasting the tape together. The sorint crack, J. R. N. Cumberbatch, who started from scratch, deadheated with Hedge (BJyds) for second place in the 100 yards handicap, which was won by a Pahiatua competitor, R. Murch, off Byds. Cumberbatch, who was feeling the effects of travelling, also started in the 220 yards, but was unplaced. John R. Ashmead, who was ill on the journey over the Rimutakas, did not compete, but gave an exhibition of high and long jumps. In the high jump he cleared six feet, a feat accomplished by only three New Zealanders. In the long jump he covered 21ft 4in. The manager of the team (Mr M. S. L. Joseph), a good all-round athlete, was a starter in the 100 and 120 yards events, but was unplaced. A. Fitch, the American coach, at present under contract to the Wellington centre, made an attempt on the 130 vards world record. He was paced by a cyclist, who, however, was of little assistance. He covered the distance in 13 ;-10sec, five-tenths of a second short of the record. R P. Barrer, of Dannevirke, won the mile' event for the Hall Cup in 4min 24sec. The Feilding cyclist, A. H. Allen, scooped the pool in the cycling events, winning the half-mile in 63sec, the mile in 2min 14 l-ssec, the two miles in 4min 38 l-ssec, and the three miles in 7min 50 4-ssec.
