NATIONAL SURF TITLES

* CONTESTS AT NEW BRIGHTON . ST. CLAIR WINS NELSON SHIELD VISITING TEAMS TAKE HONOURS Teams from 10 clubs contested the surf championships of New Zealand on tiic New Brighton beach over the week-end. With all the Dominion's leading surf swimmers competing for the titles and for places in the New Zealand team foi I Australia, the meeting would have been one of the most successful events New Brighton has known, but steady southwest rain yesterday made the day miserable and inevitably dampened the pubHc'senthusiasm.

The surf was running very light, an effect of the south-west wind. For the northern teams this was favourable, but for_ local competitors who fare better in heavy sea it was decidedly unlucky. The two Wellington clubs, Lyall Bay and Maranui,' secured six of the 10 titles, but the principal event, the Nelson Shield for rescue and resuscitation, was won b\ St. Clair (Dunedin). St. Clair was approximately 14 seconds behind New Brighton on swimming tine, but was given the decision on the resuscitation. A full list of the new champions is as "follows:

Senior Rescue and Resuscitation, Nelsoi Shield—St. Clair (Dunedin). Beltman's Championship—J. C. Blakelej Lyall Bay (Wellington) Four-man Alarm—Maranui (Wellington) Cambrian Resuscitation Shield—Mara I»ui (Wellington). Senior Surf Race—F. G. Ryan (TaraJiaki).

Senior Surf Relay—Maranui (Welling ton).

March Pas)>-Lyall Bay (Wellington). Junior Rescue and Resuscitation—Lyall Bay (Wellington). Junior Surf Race—H. Goldsmith (Taylor's Mistake). Junior Surf Relay—St. Clair (Dunedin) Beltman's Race Before the opening of the meeting on Saturday the teams inarched past and lined up in fnont of a dais, where speeches were made by Mr H. S. Feast, presidem of the Canterbury Surf Lite-Saving Association; Mr P. F. Coira. president of thp New Zealand Surf Life-Saving Association; ami the Mayor of New Brighton, Mi E. L. Smith, who declared the meeting open. The speakers paid tribute to the efficiency of the clubs and to the coin munity service they were giving. The Union Jack was then hoisted ana the competitors, raising their hands ir salute, took an oath, pledging themselves to respect the regulations in a spirit of true sportsmanship. Saturday's heats were held in a medium surf with a heavy southerly thag which fully tested the capacity of the swimmers Several of the fancied competitors in the individual event, the beltman's championship, found the sea too much for them and were eliminated, leaving strong heavy sea swimmers to contest the semi-final and final. \

A. T. Dalton (North Beach), holder of the championship for the last two years met J. C. Blakeley (Lyall Bay) in the final, and lost the title to him by thretfifths of a second. Dalton broke away to a lead of approximately five yards or. the run into the surf, and swimminsj steadily seemd likely to hold his lead to the buoy, but Blakeley shot forward over the dying stages with a brilliant sprint and caught Dalton, who was tiring. The Wellington man's hand went up at the buoy just three-fifths of a second ahead of Dalton s, and the North Beach Champion was thus narrowly defeated in his attempt to win the beltman's championship for the third year in succession. Blakeley's was a powerful effort. He won the, title eight years ago, and although older than most of the competitors, retains a brilliant turn of speed. Nelson Shield The Nelson Shield finalists were Taylor's Mistake, St. Clair, and New Brighton. New Brighton established an early lead in the surf, and were out again with approximately 14 seconds to spare, but through ; a regrettable misunderstanding the New Brighton man did only one minute's resuscitation instead of the required two. Decision was delayed while the judges went into consultation, and it was afterwards announced that St. Clair had won, with New Brighton second and Taylor's Mistake third. Maranui's B team was successful in the four-man alarm, with Maranui A second and North Beach third. North Beach reached the buoy first, but brought the patient and beltman back some ■ distance behind the Maranui teams, who retained their position on the beach work. On this event the Cambrian Resuscitation Shield was awarded, Maranui B taking the title.

F. G. Ryan (Taranaki) won the senior surf race with four and three-fifths of a second to spare from J. Clark (Lyall Bay). A. T. F. Stokes* (New Brighton) was third. Maranui won the senior surf relay, leading all the way. In a great contest for second place, with fortunes changing on each lap, Lyall Bay beat New Brighton. * Honours in the junior events were evenly distributed. The rescue and resuscitation championship was won by Lyall Bay, who clearly defeated Taylor's Mistake. The junior surf race was~the only event won by a local club, H. Goldsmith (Taylor's Mistake), winning from R. Kennedy (North Beach). St. Clair won the Junior surf relay for the third year In succession, leading all the way. The nominees for the New Zealand team to go to Australia will assemble at the New Brighton Surf Club's pavilion at 10 o'clock this morning, for further trials.
