BETTER FACILITIES AT MOUNT COOK
CABINET APPROVES GRANT
fFrom Our Parliamentary Reporter*! WELLINGTON, January 21. Tourists will benefit considerably from the grant which has been approved by the Cabinet for improved facilities at the Hermitage, Mount Cook, and the Ball Hut chalet, situated some distance from the Hermitage, at the junction of the Caroline and Tasman glaciers. The total grant is £2400. This money will be used to provide telephone facilities between the Ball Hut and the Hermitage, thus filling a desire which hundreds of tourists have expressed in recent years, and also to improve the electric lighting plant at the Hermitage. The existing hydro-electric scheme will be brought more up to date to ensure a first-class lighting system. It is probable that the Public Works Department will undertake all this work, although the total sum has been made available to the Mount Cook Company.
