WOMAN'S BODY FOUND
RECOVERED FROM ROCKS IN HARBOUR v INQUEST OPENED AND ADJOURNED The body of Kate McLeod, who was reported missing to the Lyttelton police on Wednesday, was found early yesterday afternoon on the rocks below Windy Point, in Lyttelton Harbour, It was badly 'bruised and had evidently been in the sea, as the clothing was wet. One leg was broken and there was a superficial ■wound in the throat. An inquest was opened last evening before Mr F. F. Reld, Coroner. Evidence of identification was given by Mrs Cecilia Cowan, of Norwich quay, Lyttelton, who said she had known Miss McLeod since last April. On Monday Miss McLeod came to see witness and told her'--that she had booked a room at the Mitre Hotel'. Witness said that Miss McLeod told her she had come to Lyttelton to stop the marriage of Hughie McMillan, a member of the crew of the Waikouaiti, and a woman who lived in Lyttelton. She showed witness a wedding ring and some papers, which witness did not examine. ' Miss McLeod called on witness again the following morning. She seemed to be upset and began to cry. She related to witness a conversation she had had with the woman whom McMillan proposed to marry. She said that if fhe marriage took place it would-be over her dead body. Witness said McMillan was usually known as "Hughie," but his Christian name was Ewan. "Because of the nature of the injuries sustained by the woman, and in particular the wound in the throat, I must order a post-mortem examination to be made," said the Coroner. The inquest would be adjourned sine die.
