MORE BIRTHS IN BRITAIN
♦ SMALL INCREASE LAST YEAR CRUDE DEATH-RATE RISES (BRITISH OFFICIAL WTKELiSS.) (Received January 20, 7.30 p.m.) RUGBY. January 19. The rise in the British birth-rate continued last year, according to returns furnished by the RegistrarGeneral. The birth-rate in England and Wales in 1937 is estimated at 14.9 births a 1000 of population. The crude death-rate was 12.4 a 1000. and the deaths of children under one year a 1000 births were 58. The birth-rate shows an increase of .1' over 1936. but the crude deathrate is the highest since 1929, being .3 above that of 1936. The increase L largely associated with the heavy influenza mortality of the first quartc. of the year. Infant mortality was 1.0 a 1009 below that of 1936.
