REPAIRING OF FENCES

WORK AT AKAROA DECISION OF BOROUGH COUNCIL The first meeting of the Akaroa Borough Council after the holidays was held on Wednesday. There were present the Mayor (Mr F. Davis) and Crs. B. T. Baughan, E. G. McNabb, W. N. Williams, G. Whelch, and A. Shut- ! tleworth. Leave of absence was granted Crs. R. Bruce, F. Wright, E. Longdate, and W. Pool. Correspondence was read from Messrs Meares, Williams, and Holmes in reference to the council's tenants at Dromore, and from the Canterbury Employers' Association about the clerical workers' award. The Mayor was appointed a delegate to attend a meeting of the association on January 2(>. The balance-sheet for 193(5-37 was received from the Audit Department without a tag, and adopted by the council. It was decided to assist the Croquet Club in repairing the fences, as the greens were on council property. An application from the bowling club for an increased water supply was granted. It was decided not to send a delegate to the municipal conference to be hold at New Plymouth. Reports from the works and reserve committee were received and adopted. The financial report showed receipts to have been £9l 14s 4d. Accounts passed for payment totalled £389 12s. SUNLIGHT LEAGUE CAMP - • ACTIVITIES AT AKAROA The Sunlight League camp for children at Akaroa under Nurse Spring and assistants is running well. The children. 60 in number, aged from six years to nine, are all having a splendid time. The camp is close to a wide sandy beach, and there is perfect weather for bathing and paddling. The residents keep the camp well supplied with fruit and vegetables. The children will leave next week and another party will arrive in their place. OBSCENE LANGUAGE USED MAN SENTENCED AT KAIKOURA At a sitting of the Magistrate's Court at Kaikoura. before Messrs J. Davidson and J. Boyd, J.P.'s, Harry Dredge, alias William Henry Dredge, was charged that on January 17 he was found drunk in Beach road, Kaikoura, and that he used obscene language in a public place. On the first charge he was convicted and discharged, and on the second charge he was convicted and sentenced to two months' imprisonment. At a sitting of the Civil Court at Kaikoura, before Mr 11. A. Young. S.M., judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following cases: New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative v. F. W. Garrett, £4 lis; J. W. Anderson v. F. W. Garrett, £4 14s 6d; W. E. Richardson v. J. Tait, £5 2s 4d. H. D. Stillvzoll was ordered to pay A. Manoy and Sons £l2 14s 3d and costs £1 Is, in default 14 days' imprisonment. W. Dempster was ordered to pay Hobbs and Morris £4 9s and costs £1 9s in default four days' imprisonment. F. Barry was ordered to pay H. C. Irwin £24 lG.s 5d with costs £1 lis fid, in default 2(i days' imprisonment, warrant to be suspended on payment of 10s a week. A prohibition order was made against F. Gailick for 12 months, operative in the CliristcUurch, Hurunui, and Wairau licensing districts. K. L. Smith, for whom Mr J. W. Anderson appeared, was charged with driving a motor vehicle without proper caie and attention, and with driving a motor vehicle without a warrant of litness. He was convicted on the first charge and lined £4 with costs, and his licence .suspended for one month. On the second charge he was lined 10s. KIMBERLEY HARVEST SEASON CROPS REPORTED TO BE LOOKING WELL Many early oat crops in the KimbcrJey district have been reaped and stacked, but the wheat reaping will not be general for about 10 days. The warm weather and north-west winds during last week have hastened thi ripening of the crops considerably. Several good crops of peas and rape are to be seen and the potato crops are looking remarkably well. WOMEN'S DIVISION OF FARMERS' UNION CUST-WEST EYRETON The monthly meeting of the' CustWest Eyreton branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held in the West Eyreton Hall, with Mrs R. Wolff presiding. It was decided to ask for four lectures frorr. the Rangiora resident tutor from the Association for Country Education. Miss E. Burns was elected organiser of the groups which will take weekly lectures from the tutor. A letter was read from Professor A. G. Strong, dean of the Otago Home Science Faculty, who will give lectures at Rangiora during February. Results of competitions were: — Smallest flower in garden, Mrs Montgomery 1, Miss V. Bradley 2, Mrs Burns 3; largest flower in the garden, Miss M. Mcintosh 1, Mrs H. Tallott 2, Misses E. Burns and V. Bradley (equal) 3; piece of Christmas cake, Mrs Mcintosh 1. Mrs Backet. Misses V. Bradley and L. Woodfield (equal) 2. SOCIAL AT HALSWELL A successful card party was held in the Halswell Hall under the supervision of the hall committee. There was a good attendance. Competitions in the card room were won by Mrs Wilhelm and Mrs McNamara, Mr Cox and Mr Sunbeam. The masters of ceremonies were Messrs H. Hayes and H. Sunbeam, , -—___.
